General Interests

Before pursuing PhD studies and turning my attention to K-12 teacher education and educational research, I taught Kindergarten and K-5 special education in Seattle Public Schools, and worked as an education coordinator for a Head Start preschool program.

The over-arching purpose of my scholarship is improving the public school education of Black and Brown children in the United States. My research currently focuses on family-school relationships. My dissertation, "Racial Realist Parent Involvement: A Critical Race Multicase Study of Black Parents' School Engagement Narratives," emphasizes that experiencing and resisting racism is part-and-parcel of Black parents' K-12 school involvement. I also critically examine parent involvement policy and practice as it relates to white parents, as well as how preservice teachers are taught to think about and approach relationships with their students' parents.
