Visiting Assistant Professor of History

Erin Newton

Erin M. Newton is a historian of modern Japanese history. She has a B.A. in International Affairs and Japanese Language and Literature from the George Washington University, an M.A. in Asian Studies and Women and Gender Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, and an M.A. and PhD in History from the University of Chicago.

Her research focuses on nursing care and nursing education over the long-20th century in Japan and uses touch as a means for reorienting the narrative of nursing labor onto nurses. She's excited to return to Knox this year, where she taught previously as a Visiting Instructor of History in 2022-23, as well as to share her enthusiasm for the history of science and medicine and Japanese studies with these incredible students.
