Teresa L. Amott, 19th President of Knox College

Knox President Teresa L. Amott

Dr. Teresa L. Amott has spent her adult life, as she says, on "one wonderful college tour."

She received her bachelor's degree in economics from Smith College and her Ph.D. in economics from Boston College. She began her professional career at a liberal arts college—Wellesley College—and experienced faculty life at larger institutions, including the University of Massachusetts, before returning to the liberal arts setting, accepting faculty and administrative positions at Bucknell University and Gettysburg College. Most recently, she served as provost and dean of the faculty of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York.

"I know from my own experiences as a student, a faculty member, and an administrator, that there is no setting more powerfully suited for learning than a residential liberal arts college."

Knox's first female president followed the journey from upstate New York that George Washington Gale made 180 years ago, when he established a prairie college dedicated to access for all students regardless of race, gender, or means. "Knox was founded on the principles of inclusion and access, and my election as president is just another step in the direction established long ago," says President Amott. "I am honored to be the first woman to serve as the president of Knox College."

Since joining the Knox community July 2011, President Amott has focused her efforts on the creation and implementation of a strategic plan, Knox 2018, which calls for advancing the College's distinctive approach to liberal education for the 21st century, fostering engagement and participation across the many constituencies that make up the Knox community, renewing campus facilities, and ensuring the sustainability of the College for generations to come.

"I am invigorated and emboldened by the Knox 2018 strategic plan and the progress we have made so far. I hope that you, members of the Knox community, continue to follow our progress and share your thoughts with us as well. This is a transformative moment for Knox College, and I hope that you join us on this enlightening journey."
