An abstract painting, one of the entries in the annual Al Young Art Show.

Knox 2018 challenges the College to push the boundaries of teaching and scholarship; to expand learning opportunities beyond the classroom; to develop and nurture a campus community—faculty, staff, and students—that reflects today’s global world; to increase engagement with its network of alumni, parents, and the surrounding community; to reshape and renew its physical spaces; and to enhance its financial base.

Today, Knox College faces external challenges that are common to all liberal arts colleges and higher education as a whole. These challenges rise directly from the very attributes that make a Knox education so valuable—a mission of access; small classes and a faculty committed to mentoring students; a residential learning environment that provides students with a variety of co-curricular opportunities; and a rich assortment of learning and experiential opportunities both on and off campus—all of which are expensive to maintain and provide. In addition, the world has changed. New education providers, including online and for-profit educational programs, are competing for prospective students; technology has transformed virtually every aspect of economic and social life; the questioning of the value of a liberal arts education is widespread in the media and among the public; and graduates must compete for jobs in a global market. It is clear that Knox and its peers face many powerful challenges that aren’t likely to disappear.

Yet there has been no time in history when we have needed individuals educated in the liberal arts tradition more than now; individuals who can chase the big questions and adapt with creativity to the pace of change in a globalized society. By capitalizing on our strengths—a diverse community dedicated to active, engaged learning and committed to a sustainable, inclusive world—Knox College is well positioned to prepare students to lead lives of meaning and purpose in the 21st century.

The Knox 2018 strategic plan includes three goals:

  1. Advance Knox’s Distinct Approach to Liberal Learning
  2. Engage Our Diverse, Vibrant Campus Community
  3. Ensure a Knox Education for Generations to Come
