Knox College Choir Fall Concert

The Knox College Choir presents its free, public Fall Concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, November 2, in Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, on the Knox campus in Galesburg.

The 47-voice choir is conducted by Laura Lane, professor of music and director of choral activities. The wide-ranging program includes works spanning more than 500 years and several cultural traditions. The selections are:

-- Angelus ad pastores ait, a late Renaissance motet by the Dutch composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck.

-- Alma Redemptoris Mater, a motet by the 16th century master Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina,

-- Lacrymosa and Domine Jesu Christe, two movements from Requiem, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; featuring pianist Casey Dierlam playing a reduction of the orchestral parts, and a quartet of choir members, Martina Pezzino, Caitlyn Morgan, Clint Davis, and Jmaw Moses.

-- The Stars Stand up in the Air, by Eric Barnum, based on an Irish poem about love and loss.

-- little man in a hurry, by Eric Whitacre; a fast and funny contemporary work based on a witty poem by e. e. cummings and featuring the choir's pianist Casey Dierlam.

The Knox College Chamber Singers, an elite vocal ensemble chosen from among members of the choir, will perform three works:

-- Bogoroditse Djevo, a short, surprising contemporary piece by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.

-- Ubi caritas; based on Gregorian chant, a contemporary piece by Ola Gjeilo, a California-based Norwegian composer and recording artist.

-- Tell My Ma, a traditional Irish Folk Song, arranged byJon Washburn, featuring Mary Houlihan, soprano soloist, McLeod Sumner on fiddle, and Knox College vice-president Tom Axtell on spoons.
