Engage Knox Combines Community Service and Carnival

Knox students participate in community service throughout Galesburg.

Knox College will host Engage Knox, a daylong event combining community service and a community carnival, on Saturday, April 25. Sponsored by the Kleine Center for Community Service and Student Senate, Engage Knox will consist of volunteer opportunities for Knox students in the morning and a series of afternoon activities especially designed for children and families.

Student volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday on the Gizmo patio before heading to their community service sites. They will return to campus by 12:45 p.m. The carnival will begin at 12:30 p.m. on the Knox campus.

These are the locations and descriptions of the service projects:

Nielson Elementary School. Working with members of the Nielson School Student Council, volunteers will clean the school and may also pick up trash around the neighborhood.

Faith United Methodist Church. Volunteers will help with general cleaning inside the building, as well as sprucing up the property outside.

Knox Farm. Volunteers will do some weeding at the Knox Farm, prepare the soil, and plant new crops for the Knox cafeteria.

Knox Prairie Community Kitchen. Volunteers will clean the kitchen and dining room of Central Congregational Church, which is the site of KPCK's twice-a-month community dinners.

Safe Harbor. Volunteers will clean and organize the garage and may also clean playground equipment.

Galesburg Civic Art Center. Volunteers will help prime office space to make way for a mural that will be painted by the Galesburg High School Art Club.

Discovery Depot Children's Museum. Volunteers will help plant a butterfly garden and install pots for an outdoor area, spruce up the caboose and outdoor exhibit areas, and clean the playground and parking lot.

Here is the afternoon schedule of activities:

12:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. -- Kids Carnival, including a bake sale, "mud and chips" lunch for purchase, face-painting, bracelet-making, crafts, Asha For Life community booth, and College For Kids sign-up.
