Creative writing students have ample opportunities to expand their education beyond the classroom. Opportunities include working on a collection of creative works as part of an Honors project, getting a feel for a possible future through an internship, or taking advantage of one of Knox's many off-campus study programs.

Sharing Our Work

Our students not only learn from leading poets, authors, and scholars, but have many opportunities outside of the classroom to create and share their own work:

Catch -- nationally award-winning student creative arts magazine

Cellar Door -- literary magazine

Quiver - specializing in humor, sci-fi, fantasy, and children's literature

Common Room -- online student journal of literary criticism

The Knox Student -- award-winning student newspaper

We also offer many writing awards to recognize outstanding student work and encourage our students to submit their best work for national publication and writing competitions, such the prestigious ACM Nick Adams Fiction Competition. In its 50-year history, more winners and finalists have come from Knox than from any other college.

Student Research and Creative Projects

Many of our majors—and minors—pursue College Honors or other research and creative projects.  Some students even present their work at national or international conferences.

Off-Campus Programs

Knox students take advantage of more than two dozen off-campus study programs.  Programs of interest to students in writing and literature include:

  • London and Durham Programs
  • Chicago Semester in the Arts
  • Ireland: Dublin Writer's Programs (IES)
  • Newberry Library Program in the Humanities
  • Chicago Urban Studies Semester
  • Study abroad in Asia and Latin America
  • Green Oaks Term
