Helvie receives Stellyes International Internship

Sable Helvie, a St. Louis, Missouri, native and a student at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, has been named recipient of a 2006-2007 Stellyes International Internship and will teach English as a second language in Barcelona, Spain.

Helvie, a 2004 graduate of Parkway North High School in St. Louis, is the daughter of Nancy Riehl of Chesterfield, Missouri. She is a junior majoring in anthropology/sociology and modern languages.

The Stellyes International Internship is for students in Knox's Besancon or Barcelona program who seek to enrich their understanding of the life, culture and enterprises of Spain, France, and Europe. Established in 1994, the internship is sponsored by the Eleanor W. Stellyes Fund.

Helvie spent her spring term teaching English part time at Kingsbrook School in Barcelona. She will continue teaching at Kingsbrook full time throughout the summer.  She brings to the position a determination as well as an understanding of the frustration of learning foreign languages having studied Spanish, Japanese, and most recently, French. "I want to teach English in non-traditional ways that appeal to the lifestyles of students," she said in her application for the award. "I believe by basing the lessons around something they are interested in or things that are central to their daily existence, it will inspire them to keep learning."

"The Stellyes International Internship is a special opportunity that Knox offers to its students who participate on its overseas programs. It is an ideal example of how Knox integrates academic work with experiential learning outside the classroom. The Stellyes Fellows are particularly well prepared to pursue international careers in business, government, or with non-governmental organizations after graduation?not just locally, but also nationally and globally," said Steven Bailey, Associate Dean of the College.
