March 25, 2005

GALESBURG — The staff of The Knox Student, the campus newspaper at Knox College, recently received six awards from the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA).

  • Third-place award in general excellence — the highest honor given to non-daily campus newspapers with circulations under 4,000.
  • First place in headline writing to Meg Huizenga and Jorja Ackers, for "Keyes found on campus" — the front-page story on U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes' visit to Knox last year.
  • Two second-place awards to Devin Hogan and Chris Etheridge for their designs of the newspaper's front page and sports section.
  • Second place in news photography to Andy Fitz for a picture of the Alpha Phi Omega/Mortar Board blood drive.
  • Third place in sports feature writing to Kyle Romine for his story on Jake Ayers, a quarterback on the Knox football team.

This year is the second consecutive year that the Knox College newspaper has won six ICPA awards.

"In my time at Knox, this newspaper has grown out of its shell and explored new forms of writing and design," said Chris Etheridge, editor-in-chief.

"These awards reflect the long hours that the staff has put in this year," Etheridge said. "They also are a result of in-class experience the staff has gained from Knox's new journalism program."

History of The Knox Student
The Knox Student, which this year expanded from bi-weekly to weekly publication, has been published since 1878. It was founded by Samuel S. McClure, an 1882 Knox graduate who later created McClure's Magazine, the influential Progressive Era newsmagazine that is widely acknowledged as the first American publication to focus on investigative journalism.

With a weekly circulation of about 1,700, The Knox Student is distributed free to all students, staff and faculty of the college, and is also available by mail subscription.

Journalism Program
Knox's Program in Journalism is directed by Marilyn Webb, distinguished professor of journalism and a former editor of several national magazines; and David Amor, lecturer in anthropology and sociology and an expert in mass media and communication theory. Amor also serves as the paper's faculty advisor.

The Illinois College Press Association is an organization of college newspapers and print magazines affiliated with the Illinois Press Association. ICPA awards are given in four categories — open to all schools, daily newspapers, non-daily newspapers with a circulation over 4,000, and non-daily newspapers with a circulation under 4,000.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 46 states and 41 nations. Knox's 'Old Main' is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
