To help students succeed in residential life and learning, the Office of Student Development provides many services. More... Books & Supplies. Located in the lower level of Seymour Union, the Knox Bookstore carries all the texts and supplies you'll need for your classes at Knox, as well as toiletries, stationery, gifts and Knox souvenirs. Campus Safety & Security. The Office of Campus Safety is committed to maintaining both the safety of the campus and empowering you in your own sense of security. In addition to escorting you home if you're in the lab or the library after dark and opening your room if you've forgotten your keys, the Office also manages a Safe Whistle program, offers a self-defense class for women, as well as workshops on basic safety awareness. Jobs & Internships. Knox's Center for Career and Pre-Professional Development helps students explore their interests and skills as they look toward the future, particularly through its array of internships. Among the services: self-assessment and counseling, job postings, and even mock interviews. Staff will also connect you with Knox's accomplished and accessible alumni. Tutoring and Skills Training. Recognizing that students often learn best from their peers, the Center for Teaching and Learning offers one-on-one tutoring and peer instruction in all subject areas, with a particular focus on math, research and writing, as well as study skills and time management. Community Service. Student volunteer activities are coordinated and supported by the Center for Community Service. Many Knox students volunteer directly in the Galesburg community, in such forms as tutoring local high school students at Carver Community Center, serving as literacy volunteers at the Heartland Literacy Coalition and providing volunteer staff support for the Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center. Technology Resources & Training. The Knox Computer Center runs five computer labs, including the Caterpillar classroom, containing Linux workstations with flat panel displays, and the Centel Data Analysis Lab. The Computer Center also sponsors free workshops on a number of different software packages. A campus-wide, fiber-optic Ethernet network links all academic buildings and student residences. Students have free, unlimited access to the Internet, the library catalog, numerous software packages, networked laser printer and e-mail. The campus also has a cable TV system. More... Counseling. Knox provides workshops on a range of issues and techniques, such as stress management, relaxation methods, anxiety and depression, and assertiveness. A psychologist provides individual counseling. More... Intercultural Life. Drawing from 48 states and 40 countries, Knox's student body is a wonderful mix of cultures and backgrounds. The Office of Intercultural Life helps to meet the needs and concerns of students of color, women, and international students through academic and personal counseling, and by providing information on scholarships, internships, and employment opportunities. This office also assists students in presenting major campus events, such as Gay Pride Week, Black History Month, and the Crossroads International Fair, which draws more than 2,000 visitors to the campus each year. They maintain a staff that is experienced and committed to the special needs of international students, from assistance with visa questions to issues of cultural adjustment and language assistance. Student Health Services. Provides health care for all students, regardless of whether they purchase supplemental health insurance through the College. Students receive basic care from the on-campus Student Health Center.
