Turkey Carries Food Gifts
College presidents deliver on Bronze Turkey football wager
November 18, 2003

MONMOUTH -- While the Bronze Turkey escaped Knox this year, the annual football game between Knox and Monmouth colleges has paid off again for a Monmouth food bank.

Knox College President Roger Taylor delivered ten frozen turkeys on Friday (Nov. 14) to the Jamieson Community Center in Monmouth, to pay off on his wager with Monmouth College President Richard Giese.

"It's a tremendous rivalry between two great colleges," Taylor said. "Next year we'll be doing this in Galesburg." The bet requires the president of the losing college to deliver frozen turkeys to a food bank in the winner's city.

Taylor purchased the turkeys earlier on Friday at the East Main Street Hy-Vee store in Galesburg.

Assisting with the delivery were Knox students from the College's chapter of Mortar Board -- Sarah Van Niewall, Gina Salamone, Susannah Go, and Heather Papp.

Also along on the delivery was actress Amy Carlson, a Knox graduate who was visiting the College to give a campus lecture. Giese was accompanied by several students and coaches from Monmouth College.

In addition to the turkeys, Taylor and Giese delivered several cases of canned goods to the Jamieson Center.

It's the third straight year that Taylor has made the turkey gift to the Jamieson Center since the wager was initiated in 2001. Monmouth, which won the game on Nov. 8 by a score of 39-8, leads the series 55-50-10.

Knox and Monmouth first played each other in football in 1891, making the series one of the oldest college football rivalries in the nation.
