Web pages on the Knox College website, www.knox.edu, adhere to the following specifications. For questions about web page development, contact Ron Bronson. Additional Information If you would like for copy, images, or a table to appear on the right side of the page, the information needs to be place in the Additional Information text box. To create a shaded purple background, use the following code, replacing "text" with the copy you would like to have appear in the box: <table class="sidebar" height="277" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="150" bgcolor="#ebe5eb" border="0"><tbody><tr><td><img height="23" src="Images/display/sidebar/top_left.gif" width="26"></td><td> </td><td><img height="23" src="Images/display/sidebar/top_right.gif" width="26"></td> </tr> <tr valign="top"><td> </td><td> <table style="WIDTH: 75%" border="0"> <tbody><tr><td>text</td></tr></tbody></table> </td><td> </td></tr><tr><td><p align="center"><img height="23" src="Images/display/sidebar/bottom_left.gif" width="26"></p></td><td> </td><td><p align="center"><img height="23" src="Images/display/sidebar/bottom_right.gif" width="26"></p></td></tr></tbody></table>
Ellipsis Four periods mark the omission of a full sentence or sentences; three periods mark the omission of works within a sentence or indicate a pause in speech or thought. "The spirit of American radicalism is destructive and aimless .... On the other side, the conservative party ... is timid and merely defensive of property." Em dash Use em-dashes to set off distinct thoughts within a sentence. Place a space on either side of the em dash. Right: No one disputes that Thom—who spells his name with an 'h'—is a great guy. To make an em dash, use the following key stroke: (PC) control + alt + dash on number pad (MAC) option + shift + dash (Web) two dashes. Thom -- I think that's how you spell his name -- is a great guy. Headlines The first and last words and all nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and subordinating conjunctions (if, because, as, that, etc.) are capitalized. Headers within body copy should not be larger than the body copy text. To separate headers and body copy text, make the header bold. Images Within body copy, do not exceed 300 pixels in width. If the page has additional support in the right column, do not exceed a width of 200 pixels. Images should not exceed 72 pixel resolution. Size of corner images Photos must be RGB. In Photoshop, change CMYK images to RGB by Mode>RGB Color. Thumbnail images must be 100 pixels X 100 pixels. Links The CMS automatically makes all links bold. For long lists of links, it's less straining to the eye to remove the bold. To do this, go into the HTML. Add <a class="gateway" href= at the beginning of link. The link will still be purple, but will no longer be bold. You have the option to create a link that will open within the existing window or a new window. All links within the CMS should open in the existing window. Any time a link will take a user from the Knox site, it should open in a new window so that the user can easily get back to the Knox site. When you create a link, check Target: New Window, and the page will open in a new window. If left blank, the link will replace the current page within the window. If you would like to create a new page that doesn't open full screen, add the following HTML code: <li><a onclick="window.open('http://www.delta.com/home/index.jsp', '','height=250,width=600,menubar=yes,scrollbars=yes,toolbar=yes,location=yes,directories=yes,resizable=yes')" href="#">Delta Air Lines</a><br></li> PDFs Links to PDFs must open in a new window. The link should have (PDF) after it so that viewers know that if they click on the link they will be opening a PDF. If you have a number of PDFs listed on a page you may want to add the following copy before the list: "For your convenience, several necessary forms are available in PDF format. Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to view these files, which you can download for free at the Adobe Web site (link to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)."
Publish As Names All pages in the top two tiers of navigation and all pages that will be referred to in publications need to have "publish as" names. This allows users to type in a name for a page rather than the x-number, which is less attractive and harder to remember. Instead of www.knox.edu/x123453.xml, the page could be named www.knox.edu/studenthandbook.xml. To add a publish as name, right click on the page in the CMS tree and choose Properties. Click on the System Attributes tab and type the name after Publish As:. The name should be short with no spaces. If you would like to create a link that doesn't contain the ".xml" extension, contact Ron Bronson. Related Links A list of links in the left column related to the body copy that is not included in the parent, child or sibling navigation. Keep short and descriptive. Use headline capitalization.
