Memorial Gymnasium was built in 1950 as a cooperative effort between Galesburg businessmen and Knox to honor World War I and II veterans. Its maple floor is ideal for varsity level basketball and volleyball, as well as intramural volleyball, and it has the largest seating capacity in the Midwest Conference. But since its original construction, the look and feel of the Gym has not changed.
Thanks to the generosity of Duke Petrovich '74 and his wife, Nancy, fundraising is now underway to renovate the Gym and the attached lobby area between the new E. & L. Andrew Fitness Center lobby and the T. Fleming Fieldhouse lobby. The Petrovich's have provided half of the renovation cost. Other six-figure leadership donors to the renovation include Tom '66 and Sue Fuerst Anderson '71. The renovation will retain the integrity of the "historic feel" to Memorial Gym and, at the same time, make the facility state-of-the art. Enhancements to the Gym will include: - A new HVAC system.
- Walls painted one consistent color.
- New wood bleachers that are auto-tracking for ease of movement.
- A new sound system that will allow teams and spectators to hear the spoken word.
- Scoreboard upgrades.
- New banners and logo.
- New scorer's table with modern hookups.
The lobby area will feature: - Rubber flooring to match the E. & L. Andrew Fitness Center lobby.
- Redesigned, retrofited, and accessible men's and women's restroom facilities.
- An upgraded concession stand.
Funding Opportunities The cost estimate for the renovation is $500,000. $395,000 has been raised. Fundraising will continue until the goal is met. For gifts of certain levels, naming opportunities are available.
