Knox Wins 2008 Midwest Conference Baseball Championship Knox won four straight games, including three games on Sunday, to win the 2008 Midwest Conference Baseball Championship. The Prairie Fire defeated Ripon twice, by scores of 4-2 and 5-4, to claim the crown. It is Knox's first conference baseball championship since Knox, Monmouth and Coe shared the title in 1993, and Knox's first outright conference championship since 1986.

Final Results from the MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Monmouth College won its eighth consecutive title on the men's side and its fourth straight on the women's side at the 2008 Midwest Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Knox College. The Prairie Fire men finished eighth and the women took ninth. Knox did win two individual championships and set a school record in a third event over the two-day event.

Results from First Day of MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Monmouth College built a 46-point lead on the men's side and a 66-point edge on the women's side after the first day of the 2008 Midwest Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Knox College. Knox's first day was highlighted by a school-record setting performance by Tim Rairdon in the men's 1500-meter run and a conference championship effort by Pam Bell in the long jump.

Knox Men's Golf Team Heading to Nationals for First Time Since 1988 For the first time in 20 years, the Knox men's golf team will be participating in the NCAA Division III Championships. Head coach C.J. Rugh and the Prairie Fire qualified for the event after winning the Midwest Conference Championship to earn an automatic berth. Knox last qualified as a team for nationals in 1988, when the team placed 18th in the country. The 2008 Championships run from May 13-16 at the Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Georgia.

Paul Bennett Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team Paul Bennett was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Baseball Team as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He received First Team All-District V recognition in the College Division and will now move to the Academic All-American ballot. Bennett is majoring in Biology at Knox College. He was named to the all-district second team a year ago.

Jordan Ball Earns NCBWA Pitcher of the Week Honorable Mention Jordan Ball, a freshman from Cuba, Illinois (Cuba High School), earned National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division III Pitcher of the Week honorable mention on Thursday, May 8. The right-hander was named the Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week earlier after appearing in three of four games over the weekend helping Knox clinch the MWC South Division title.

Katie Dura Named Third Team All-Great Lakes Region Katie Dura followed up her Midwest Conference South Division Player of the Year honor by being named to the 2008 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-Great Lakes Region Third Team on Tuesday, May 6. The senior catcher from Edwards, Illinois (Brimfield High School), led the Prairie Fire softball team in most offensive categories this season.

Katie Dura Named MWC South Division Player of the Year For the first time in school history, a Knox softball player was named the Midwest Conference South Division Player of the Year. Katie Dura earned the honor after her outstanding senior season in which she led the Prairie Fire in most offensive categories, it was announced by the conference on Tuesday, May 6. Senior Katie Schneider and junior Ashley Konicki were named to the All-Midwest Conference Second Team.

Jordan Ball Named Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week Jordan Ball, a freshman from Cuba, Illinois (Cuba High School), was named the Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, May 5. The right-hander appeared in three of four games over the weekend and earned the save as Knox clinched the Midwest Conference South Division title with a 9-7 win over Monmouth. David Marquardt Named Prairie Fire Performer of the Week David Marquardt, a senior from Bloomington, Illinois (Bloomington High School), was named the Knox College Prairie Fire Performer of the Week on Monday, May 5. Marquardt won the individual championship in helping the Knox men's golf team win the Midwest Conference Championship. The Prairie Fire now advance to the NCAA Division III Championships from May 13-16.

Schedule Set for Midwest Conference Baseball Championship Knox will host Ripon College in the first round of the Midwest Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday, May 9, at 11 a.m. on Blodgett Field. Monmouth and St. Norbert will play their opening-round game in Monmouth, also at 11 a.m. on Friday. The winners of the two games will play in Galesburg while the losers of the first-round games will meet in Monmouth at 3 p.m. Knox will host all of Saturday's action at Blodgett Field.

Knox to Host MWC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 9-10 For the first time since 1993, Knox College will host the Midwest Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on campus. The two-day event is May 9-10 on Turner Track at Trevor Field in the heart of campus. Knox was the host school for the 2003 championships, but the event was held in Monmouth.

Knox Wins South Division and Will Host MWC Baseball Tournament May 9-10 With a 9-7 win over Monmouth, Knox won the Midwest Conference South Division for the first time since 1986 and will host the 2008 MWC Baseball Tournament on May 9-10. The Prairie Fire won a four-team single-elimination playoff on Sunday, May 4, with a 10-4 win over Illinois College and the two-run victory over Monmouth, to win the division title. Knox is 11-22 overall.

Knox to Host Illinois College on Sunday in Opening Four-Team, Three-Game Playoff With Knox and Illinois College splitting their Saturday afternoon doubleheader, and Monmouth and Grinnell doing the same, the Midwest Conference South Division will be determined by a four-team, three-game playoff on Sunday. The four teams have identical 6-6 marks in conference play. The top two teams in the playoff will earn berths into the Midwest Conference Tournament, with the South Division champion hosting the event.

Knox Wins Midwest Conference Men's Golf Championship for 29th Time Knox won its 29th Midwest Conference Men's Golf Championship on Saturday with a three-round total of 970 at the Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Illinois. The Prairie Fire defeated Monmouth by six strokes to win their 20th team title since 1982. Knox senior David Marquardt was the individual medalist with a 224 (72-74-78). Kevin Foerster also earned all-conference honors by tying for 10th place.

MWC South Division Baseball Race Comes Down to Final Weekend The Midwest Conference South Division baseball race will be determined on the final day of play on Saturday, May 3. With all four teams tied with 5-5 conference marks, and the teams going head-to-head on Saturday, several possibilities still exist. The top two teams in both the North and South Divisions qualify for the conference tournament, with the South Division champion serving as tournament host this season.

Men's Golf Team at MWC Championship May 1-3 The Knox College men's golf team will participate in the 2008 Midwest Conference Men's Golf Championship starting Thursday, May 1. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being hosted by Illinois College at the Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Illinois. The Prairie Fire will be looking for their 29th overall conference title and their 20th since 1982.

Six Seniors Finish Their Prairie Fire Softball Careers Knox College recognized the six seniors between games of a doubleheader against Illinois College on Senior Day on Saturday, April 26. The six seniors - Ann Marie Albright, Katie Dura, Monyca Fisher, Jenny Golz, Bridget McCune, and Katie Schneider - wrapped up their careers as the Prairie Fire closed the 2008 season the next afternoon with a doubleheader at Blackburn College.

Ashley Konicki Named Prairie Fire Performer of the Week Ashley Konicki, a junior from Oak Lawn, Illinois (Mother McAuley High School), was named the Knox College Prairie Fire Performer of the Week on Monday, April 28. The second baseman hit .625 (15-of-24) and scored 10 runs over six games last week, and was a perfect 8-for-8 in a doubleheader against Illinois College on Saturday. Konicki finished second on the Prairie Fire softball team with a .373 batting average this season.

Memorial Gymnasium Floor Unveiled as Tim Heimann Court It came as a surprise to even the guest of honor, who admitted, "It's hard to keep secrets from me." But former Knox head men's basketball coach Tim Heimann was indeed surprised at the dedication of the freshly-painted Memorial Gymnasium floor, as it was unveiled as "Tim Heimann Court" during a ceremony on Saturday, April 26. Knox President Roger Taylor, Duke Petrovich, Illinois State Representative Don Moffitt and Heimann spoke at the unveiling.

Almohandis struck out seven over 6.1 innings of work, and earned a win and a save as the Prairie Fire swept a doubleheader from Monmouth on Sunday.

Nick Craig's Perfect Start Leading Prairie Fire Men's Tennis Team Just past the midway point of the 2008 men's tennis season, Knox has already matched its win total from a year ago. The team success has come, in large part, to the play of Nick Craig. Craig, a junior from Verona, Wisconsin (Wayland Academy), is a perfect 11-0 at #5 singles and has won five of his last six doubles matches with senior Matthew Stockov at the #3 doubles spot.

Marquardt Named Midwest Conference Men's Golfer of the Week David Marquardt, a senior from Bloomington, Illinois (Bloomington High School), was named the Midwest Conference Men's Golfer of the Week on Tuesday, April 1. Knosher Bowl Renovation Update Renovations on the Knosher Bowl were started on Monday, March 24. The $1.8 million project will include an artificial turf surface, new fencing, gates and entry area; lowering of the north berm to open the Bowl to the campus; addition of handicap parking; new goal posts; and enlarged areas for team benches and athletic training staff and equipment.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for Knosher Bowl Knox College held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, March 13, to officially start renovation of the Knox Bowl, which will be renamed the Knosher Bowl in honor of retired athletic director Harley Knosher. The ceremony included remarks from Knox College President Roger Taylor, Athletic Director Chad Eisele, Head Football Coach Andy Gibbons, and Knosher.

Katchen Named MWC Men's Tennis Performer of the Week Jared Katchen, a sophomore from Galesburg, Illinois (Galesburg High School), was named the Midwest Conference Men's Tennis Performer of the Week on Tuesday, March 11. The sophomore won both his singles and doubles match as the Prairie Fire defeated Greenville College 5-4 on Saturday, March 8. This season, Katchen is 2-1 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles action.

Rutledge Named Prairie Fire Performer of the Week for Fifth Team Jaran Rutledge, a senior from Mundelein, Illinois (Carmel High School), was named the Knox College Prairie Fire Performer of the Week for the fifth time this season after becoming a two-time All-American at the 2008 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on March 8. Rutledge, who became Knox College's first All-American wrestler after a third-place showing at the 2007 National Championships, finished eighth in this year's tournament.

Despite Injury, Rutledge Becomes Two-Time All-American Jaran Rutledge, a senior from Mundelein, Illinois (Carmel High School), became a two-time NCAA Division III Wrestling All-American after finishing eighth at heavyweight at the 2008 Wrestling Championships. Rutledge suffered a left knee strain in the first period of his first match, but perservered to pick up an overtime victory in the consolation bracket before withdrawing from the second day of action.

Indoor Track and Field Team Sets Three School Records in 2008 Under first-year co-head coaches Patrick Irwin and Dan Zierfuss, the Knox College indoor track and field team set three school records this season. Adam Kent broke the weight throw record and Tim Rairdon set the 800-meter run mark, while the men's sprint medley relay record was also toppled.

Memorial Gymnasium Renovation Update Renovations on Memorial Gymnasium were started on Monday, March 3. The gym floor was sanded down by April 18. When work is completed don't expect a new look for the facility, which was built in 1951. The recommended enhancements are designed to retain the integrity of the "historic feel" of Memorial Gym while improving the facilities for the teams and spectators.

Jaran Rutledge Seeded Fourth at NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships Jaran Rutledge, a senior from Mundelein, Illinois (Carmel High School), has been seeded fourth in the heavyweight bracket at the 2008 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, which begin Friday, March 7, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Rutledge will receive a bye in the first round to advance to the championship quarterfinals. The quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Friday.

Tim Heimann Named Midwest Conference Coach of the Year After guiding Knox to a share of fifth place in the conference, Tim Heimann was honored as the Midwest Conference Men's Basketball Coach of the Year on Tuesday, March 4. The Prairie Fire were picked to finish ninth in the conference preseason poll. Heimann, who retired from coaching at the end of the season, also won the conference honor in 1997.

Estergard and Kluge Earn All-Conference Honorable Mention Junior guard Adam Estergard, from Urbana, Illinois (Urbana High School), and senior forward Grant Kluge, from Joliet, Illinois (Reed-Custer High School), received All-Midwest Conference Men's Basketball honorable mention on Tuesday, March 4. The pair led Knox to an 8-15 overall record and a 7-9 mark in Midwest Conference play.

Jenna Finley Named to All-Midwest Conference Second Team Jenna Finley, from Serena, Illinois (Serena High School), was named to the 2007-08 All-Midwest Conference Women's Basketball Second Team on Tuesday, March 4. The senior guard led Knox in assists and minutes played, and was among the Prairie Fire team leaders in scoring, rebounding and steals.

Knox Baseball Team Anxious for 2008 Season With spring right around the corner, the Knox College baseball team is ready to get outside. Practicing indoors in the T. Fleming Fieldhouse since early February, the Prairie Fire are anxious to get the 2008 campaign started. Knox will open the season at home, on Blodgett Field, Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9, against St. Norbert College. Five all-Midwest Conference selections return from a year ago.

Tim Heimann Ends Coaching Career with 61-56 Win over Lake Forest After 24 years on the sidelines as the head men's basketball coach, Tim Heimann could not have asked for a better end to his coaching career. In front of a packed house on Basketball Homecoming, which included more than 100 former Knox basketball players, the current Prairie Fire squad rallied for a 61-56 victory over Lake Forest College on Saturday, February 23, to send Heimann out a winner.

Adam Estergard Named Prairie Fire Performer of the Week Adam Estergard, from Urbana, Illinois (Urbana High School), was named the Knox College Prairie Fire Performer of the Week on Monday, February 25. The junior averaged 9.0 points and 8.0 rebounds while not committing a single turnover in two games last week. The Knox men's basketball team finished the 2007-08 season with an 8-15 overall record and a 7-9 mark in Midwest Conference play.

Three Knox Women's Basketball Players End Careers Three Knox women's basketball players saw their careers come to an end on Senior Day on Saturday, February 23. Jenny Golz, Jenna Finley and Andie Allison donned the Prairie Fire uniform for the final time in front of a large Basketball Homecoming Day crowd in a loss to Lake Forest College. The three made a great impact on the Knox women's basketball program during their careers.

Old Siwash/Prairie Fire Athletic Club Gives $20,000 to Athletic Department At halftime of the Lake Forest-Knox College men's basketball game on Saturday, February 23, the Old Siwash/Prairie Fire Athletic Club presented a $20,000 check to the Knox College Athletic Department. The donation is an annual gift from the Club. Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) officers Katie Schneider and Aaron Willits accepted the check on behalf of the athletic department.

Jaran Rutledge Qualifies for NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships For the second straight year, Jaran Rutledge is headed to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships after finishing second at the Great Lakes Regional. The senior heavyweight won his first three matches before losing a heartbreaking double overtime tiebreaker in the finals. Rutledge, the tournament's top seed, led Knox to a 14th-place team finish. The National Wrestling Championships will be March 7-8 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Tony Meyer Earns Three Top-10 Finishes at MWC Championships Tony Meyer, a junior from St. Louis, Missouri (St. Louis University High School), led the Knox swimming and diving team with top-10 finishes in each of his three individual events at the Midwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Friday-Sunday, February 15-17. The Knox men finished eighth while the Prairie Fire women took ninth.

Adam Kent Named Midwest Conference Performer of the Week Adam Kent, from Lake Stevens, Washington (Lake Stevens High School), was named the Midwest Conference Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, February 19. The sophomore broke the Knox College school record in the weight throw and also set a personal best in the shot put at the Knox Indoor Track and Field Invitational Saturday. He was named the Prairie Fire Performer of the Week on Monday.

Knox to Host Flexbone Association Midwest Regional Clinic Knox College will host the Flexbone Association Midwest Regional Clinic on Friday and Saturday, April 25-26. The two-day coaches clinic will feature presentations from high school and college coaches from around the Midwest.

Fleming Fieldhouse. Kent set the school mark in the weight throw and Rairdon broke the 800-meter run record.

Knox and Monmouth "Think Pink" for Breast Cancer Awareness Knox College and Monmouth College showed their support in raising breast cancer awareness by participating in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) "Think Pink" initiative at the Prairie Fire-Fighting Scots women's basketball game on Wednesday, February 13. Members of both schools' women's basketball programs wore pink in support of the initiative.

The senior forward averaged 17.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in three games, and led Knox to a pair of comeback victories over Illinois College and St. Norbert last week. This season, Kluge is averaging 8.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest.

Adam Kent Sets PR in Weight Throw for Second Straight Week One week after shattering his personal best in the weight throw by more than five feet, sophomore Adam Kent again set a PR at the Illinois College Blue Classic Saturday, February 9. His throw of 48' 5.5" was nearly an inch longer than his effort from a week ago. Kent, from Lake Stevens, Washington (Lake Stevens High School) is now within 17.5 inches of the Knox College school record.

Jaran Rutledge Named Prairie Fire Performer of the Week for Fourth Time For the fourth time this season, Jaran Rutledge, a senior from Mundelein, Illinois (Carmel High School), was named the Knox College Prairie Fire Performer of the Week. The senior heavyweight won the heavyweight championship at the Pete Willson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College Saturday. Rutledge, ranked fourth in the recent NWCA Division III poll, has won four individual tournaments this year.

Matt Goedeke Named Prairie Fire Performer of the Week Matt Goedeke, a freshman from Yates City, Illinois (Farmington High School), was named the Knox College Prairie Fire Performer of the Week on Monday, January 28. Goedeke averaged double figures as Knox defeated Beloit College and Carroll College over the weekend. The Prairie Fire are now 4-4 in Midwest Conference play, which includes a 4-1 conference mark in Memorial Gymnasium.

Jaran Rutledge Fourth-Ranked Heavyweight in Recent NWCA Poll Knox College senior heavyweight Jaran Rutledge, from Mundelein, Illinois (Carmel High School), has jumped to fourth in the recent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III individual rankings. Rutledge, who became Knox's first wrestling All-American last year with his third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships, has lost only one match this season.

Janet P. Judge to Present on Social Networking Websites, Hazing and Harassment Janet P. Judge, a lawyer and former eight-time athletic varsity letter winner at Harvard/Radcliffe College, will give a presentation on social networking websites, hazing and harassment Monday, January 28, at Kresge Hall beginning at 7 p.m. The presentation, sponsored by the Knox Athletic Department, is open and free of charge to all Knox College students, faculty and staff.

Pam Bell Named Prairie Fire Performer of the Week Pam Bell, a senior from St. Louis, Missouri (Crossroads High School), was named the Knox College Prairie Fire Performer of the Week on Monday, January 21. Bell competed in four individual events and one relay at the Prairie Fire Indoor Track and Field Quadrangular at the T. Fleming Fieldhouse Saturday. She came away with three season-best marks to lead the Prairie Fire.

Knox Men Finish Third and the Women Place Fourth at the Prairie Fire Quadrangular Knox College hosted the Prairie Fire Indoor Track and Field Quadrangular in the T. Fleming Fieldhouse Saturday, January 19. The Prairie Fire men finished in third place and the women took fourth. Monmouth College won both the men's and women's meets.

Jaran Rutledge Named Prairie Fire Performer of the Week for Third Time For the third time this season and the second week in a row, Jaran Rutledge, a senior from Mundelein, Illinois (Carmel High School), was named the Knox College Prairie Fire Performer of the Week. The senior heavyweight finished 4-0 to win the heavyweight championship at the North Central College Invitational. Rutledge is the sixth-ranked heavyweight in the recent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III poll.

The senior heavyweight, ranked sixth in the recent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III poll, won all four of his matches at the third annual Chuck Porter Duals hosted by Knox Saturday. Rutledge has now won more than 100 matches in his Prairie Fire wrestling career.

Knox Finishes 0-4 at Third Annual Chuck Porter Duals The Knox wrestling team lost four times at the third annual Chuck Porter Duals. Knox lost to Wheaton College 31-15, North Central College 44-3, Wabash College 34-18, and the University of Dubuque 36-18. North Central won the six-school event with a perfect 4-0 record.

Knox Hosts Third Annual Chuck Porter Duals Saturday The Knox College wrestling team will host the third annual Chuck Porter Duals Saturday, January 5, beginning at 9 a.m. in the T. Fleming Fieldhouse. Joining Knox in the event will be North Central College, Wabash College, Wheaton College, the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and the University of Dubuque.

Madi Hanna Named to All-Tournament Team Madi Hanna, a freshman from Van Meter, Iowa (Van Meter High School), was named to the all-tournament team at the Marketing Depot USA Classic in West Palm Beach, Florida, December 18-19. The 6-3 forward/center averaged 12.0 points on 61 percent shooting from the floor, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots over two games. The Prairie Fire dropped both contests in the tournament.
