The Knox College Computer Center provides support and maintenance for all College owned equipment. The maintenance of personally owned computer equipment connected to the Knox Data Network is the responsibility of the owner. Large universities and major corporations as well as small colleges have fallen victim to rapidly spreading viruses adversely impacting essential network services. This threat is real and can have devastating effects on institutions that fall victim to rapidly spreading viruses or worms. Knox has been proactive in this area restricting certain network services such as Windows File Sharing which are exploited by viruses and worms to propagate themselves throughout the network. As students, faculty and staff join a network of over 1,500 computers, these measures of protection are needed to avoid rampant propagation. As a further preventative measure, the College provides to all students, free of charge, Trend Micro AntiVirus/AntiSpyware software. This software is available through a Web based installer for students, faculty and staff connected to the Knox network. As students, faculty and staff separate from the college, the Trend Micro AntiVirus/AntiSpyware software license is no longer valid so individuals must purchase their own software subscriptions. If you choose a product other than Trend for this subscription, you will need to uninstall the Trend Officescan product. On some computer installations, the Trend Officescan anti-virus program will not uninstall from the Windows Add/Remove Programs without providing a password. If you experience this problem, you may download an uninstaller program to remove the Trend Officescan software from your computer. - Download this file: Trend Officescan uninstaller (knoxtrenduninstall.zip) and save it to your desktop (note that this file may download automatically when clicking the link without prompting you).
- Extract (unzip) the files by right clicking on the removetrend.zip file and the selecting extract. Be sure to extract the files to a temporary directory such as c:\temp. Once the files have been extracted, close the extraction program.
- If your extraction program has not already opened the temporary folder, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the temporary folder to which you extracted the files.
- To begin the uninstallation process, double click on the file: CmnUnins.exe. A black command window will then open as the uninstallation proceeds. No messages are typically displayed in this window. You should see your hard disk activity light flashing considerably during the uninstallation. You will also see your Trend Officescan icon disappear from the Windows Taskbar. The black command window will automatically close as the completion of the uninstallation process. The uninstallation process may take as much as five minutes to complete depending upon the speed of your computer.
- The uninstallation is now complete. If you return to the Knox Campus for the fall term, you must reinstall the Trend Officescan AntiVirus software before returning to campus. Please call the Helpdesk at 309-341-7700 to request the latest version of the Trend Officescan antivirus software.
