For those students who want to conduct research in Europe on reactions to the U.S. presidential election, or participate in the Quick Start Language Program to learn French, but do not have the means to do so, help is on the way. Thanks to a $100,000 gift to the Center for Global Studies, Knox students will have more opportunities to participate in international study programs. Elzelien Hartog, a 1966 Knox graduate, recently established the Joseph J. Hartog Endowment for Global Studies and Scholarship to support expenses incurred by Knox students participating in the College's various short-term, off-campus study programs, as well as faculty research and development. The endowment is named in honor of Hartog's father, Joseph J. Hartog, an entrepreneur and businessman who valued international understanding and travel. "My father was passionate about travel and believed the key to understanding other people was to gain an appreciation of their culture," says Elzelien Hartog.

"Increasingly, our integrated international studies majors are discovering short-term international options: on-site seminars, research opportunities, internships and immersions in programs in modern languages," says Robert Seibert, professor of political science and co-chair of the Center for Global Studies. "The Hartog Endowment will provide funding for these projects for globally committed students."
