Knox’s “Old Main,” the academic heart of campus, was the setting of the historic 1858 debate between Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas—the very debate in which Lincoln first publicly challenged the morality of slavery. And since Old Main is the last standing site of a famed Lincoln-Douglas debate, it’s a National Historic Landmark—but you won’t see any velvet ropes here. Instead, Old Main is a place where you can sit in the legendary “Lincoln chair,” take lively courses in history, philosophy, English literature, creative writing, and other humanities, or sit down with the dean to talk about your goals.
