Porter Challenge Raises $100,000 for Wrestling

The Knox wrestling program is gaining enhanced practice and workout areas and new equipment, thanks to the generosity of Charles "Chuck" W. '52 and Priscilla Porter (pictured at right), as well as Knox wrestling alumni, who successfully matched the Porter's $50,000 gift with an additional $50,000. Chuck Porter was one of four students from 1949–1951 that started the Knox wrestling team.

The Porter Challenge monies:

  • Enhanced existing facilities—making them more attractive to potential grapplers. The existing Joseph '65 and Nancy Masterson wrestling practice room has been re-painted; it was last painted more than 12 years ago.
  • Expanded the space devoted to wrestling—when the fitness center opened in winter 2006, wrestling gained space from the prior Cecil-Frum Strength Training Center. A wrestling workout room, connected to the wrestling practice room, makes available to wrestlers a cable crossover machine, a seated rowing machine, a seated bench, and a stationary bike. The workout room was made possible by a generous gift from James "Sherman" Nordin '67.
  • Acquired new equipment and supplies—a "take-down machine" has been added to the wrestling practice room. This "wrestling dummy" allows solo wrestlers to practice key moves and holds. A riding time clock, monster mop and new mat were also in the mix. The new mat replaces mats that were more than 40 years old.

Any monies raised beyond those needed for the renovation will be used to support other wrestling initiatives.

Tony Islas, wrestling coach, named the annual wrestling duals competition on January 7, 2006, the Chuck Porter Duals. Hosted by Knox, the meet brings together Knox, University of Dubuque, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Wheaton,  Elmhurst, Rose-Hulman, and Lakeland Colleges.
