Lower Level The lower level houses the Knox Bookstore, the coffee/snack bar. mail room/copy center, the Lincoln Studies Center, and two 20-seat conference rooms. Main access to the lower level is through the sunken Outdoor Patio, which adjoins the Central Quadrangle. There is also a door on the building's west side, with a small recessed loading dock for bookstore and other deliveries. Access to upper floors is via an elevator and staircase outside the bookstore and a second staircase in the northeast corner
First Floor The central feature of the first floor is the Auditorium, which occupies the entire central portion of the building. The Gnothautii Wing will house the Prairie Freedom Heritage Center, along with a small conference room and building manager' s office. In the Adelphi Wing is another conference room, along with a suite of offices to house the Office of Alumni Relations and Fifty Year Club. Access to the first floor is through the large staircase on the building's north side into the Auditorium Lobby, and through separate staircases on the northeast and northwest, to the Prairie Freedom Heritage Center and the Alumni Relations suite, respectively. From the Auditorium Lobby, ramped corridors descend around the Auditorium to a broad hallway connecting the two wings and providing access to the elevator and main staircase.
The Auditorium's main floor seats 242, including seating in a recessed mezzanine. The stage is a simple platform in close proximity to the audience. A retractable screen will allow digital and cinema projection as well as audio-visual displays.
Second Floor The second floor houses the Auditorium Balcony in the central portion of the building, with the Art Gallery and the Meeting Room flanking the balcony in the Gnothautii and Adelphi wings, respectively. Visitors can enter the Auditorium Balcony either directly from the Lobby area or from the southern hallway linking the two wings. This hallway, a new addition to the building, will be glass-walled and will look out to the south, giving a striking view of Old Main, Seymour Union, Seymour Library and the whole Central Quadrangle.
The Auditorium Balcony will seat an additional 258 in fixed seating, bringing the total fixed seating to 500. There is space to accommodate another 56 in movable seating if required. A control room at the back will house the light panel and sound and video equipment.
The Art Gallery atop the Gnothautii Wing will be configured for maximum flexibility to accommodate many different kinds of displays. A simple storage/workroom area will occupy the north end, while the southern end can be configured as a separate space for smaller exhibitions.
The Meeting Room in the Adelphi Wing will be similarly flexible, serving as a lecture hall, board room or banquet room as needed. A small conference room in the northwest corner can also function as a breakout space for board and conference meetings. Central Auditorium Constructed from a computer-generated rendering of the space's true dimensions, this drawing shows a view from the southeast corner of the Auditorium's main floor. The historical nuances of the space, including the ceiling's decorative lattice work, will be restored as the room is transformed into a state-of-the-art facility adaptable for lectures, ensemble performances, and other functions.
