Revitalizing Campus Life

Central to the renovation of Alumni Hall will be the restoration of its central auditorium, creating an historic 500-seat space that will host a wide variety of campus, cultural and entertainment events. Unused since the 1960s, this striking amphitheater was the centerpiece of the original 19th-century building. The renovation will restore its beauty, including the ornate architectural detail and ceiling lattice work, lost as the building went through multiple reconfigurations. Seating 152 on its main floor, 85 in the mezzanine, and an additional 270 in the balcony, the auditorium will lend itself to a variety of configurations, from intimate recitals to community-wide public events.

On the top floor of the west-facing Adelphi Wing, the renovation will create a multi-functional, 150-seat meeting hall that will accommodate a variety of campus and public events, including gatherings as diverse as College committee meetings and catered dinners. Its capacious vaulted ceilings, excellent acoustics and striking campus view will render it a valuable and high-demand site.

Atop the east-facing Gnothautii Wing will be an art gallery in which the College will display valuable traveling exhibits, student works, and pieces from its own collections. This 2,100-square-foot space will greatly enrich the cultural opportunities both for the College and the community.

In addition, five seminar-sized conference rooms  will be available for use as seminar classrooms during school hours and for organizational meetings after-hours. Of varying size, they will accommodate groups of 10-20. They will also be available for use as conference breakout rooms.

The lower level of Alumni Hall will house key campus services—the Knox Bookstore, mail room, and copy center. These high-volume functions will be located in functional, accessible and attractive spaces in the heart of student and faculty traffic patterns. To further reinvigorate Alumni Hall as a hub of student activity, the renovation will add a coffee bar and outdoor patio that will flow from the lower level into the central quadrangle with an up-close view of the Lombard Bell Tower.

In addition to these new spaces, the renovation of Alumni Hall will restore many of the architectural features of the original building lost over the years in successive alterations, recreating a site of stunning beauty that only a few living alumni have experienced.
