Construction of the new and improved purple outdoor track is complete! The outdoor track at Trevor Field had served Knox athletes since 1961 as the venue for intercollegiate track and field competition at Knox College. Although the track was resurfaced a little more than 10 years ago, it was in dire need of expansion and repair. In addition, the other track and field event venues had not kept pace with developments and new technologies in the sport.

As part of the Fitness & Athletics Initiatives, the College  renovated the outdoor track to create a first-class facility for intercollegiate athletics and an attractive space for faculty, staff, and student fitness activities (click on photo to see enlarged view). The renovation:

  • Showcases a purple track located in the heart of the Knox campus;
  • Expanded the track from six to eight lanes, enabling the College to host home meets, including the Midwest Conference Championships;
  • Added a steeple chase pit to the west end of the track;
  • Relocated and enhanced the spaces dedicated for events including high jump, long jump/triple jump, javelin, shot put, pole vault, and discus/hammer.

The College's outdoor track encircles Trevor Field, named in honor of Dean Trevor, Knox College coach and athletic director from 1926 to 1960. A long-time and valuable member of Dean Trevor's athletic staff was Harold C. Turner, coach and professor of physical education from 1938 to 1963. A group of alumni raised funds to name the renovated track the Coach Harold Turner Track.

Fundraising for the project ran until the goal was met—$800,000 was needed to complete the project. The College earmarked $300,000 for the renovation, leaving a balance of $500,000 to be raised from Knox alumni. The fundraising goal of alumni funds was achieved!  The dedication of Turner Track and the new track and field complex will take place during Homecoming 2008.
