Zine Club!

Always spelled with an exclamation point, because its members are very excited about zines, Zine Club! brings to campus the ideas and possibilities of independent publishing. Zine Club! was revived at Knox during the 2007-2008 school year.

Zine Club!

Pronounced like "magazine" without the "maga," zines are resources for learning about:

  • Political/social issues
  • Ecology
  • Food
  • Punk culture
  • D.I.Y. culture
  • Sexual health
  • Current world issues

There are no limits as to who can write a zine or what a zine can be about -- many are personal manifestos as well.

Goals

  • Providing resources, materials, and distribution for students making their own zines
  • Maintaining the Galesburg Zine Library
  • Spreading the idea of independent publication
  • Providing an alternative to mainstream media, news, and consumerism

Past events

  • Members traveled to the 2008 Madison Zine Fest, where they picked up zines for the library, met with other distributors, and attended a workshop about political prisoner zines
  • Hosting workshops with supplies for students to make their own zines
  • Assembling collaborative zines made by students at Artsplosion events

The Galesburg Zine Library
After hauled out of the basement of the Eco House and reorganized, the nationally-recognized Galesburg Zine Library is now housed on the first floor of Seymour Library at Knox, across from old issues of Catch. The library contains zines from all over the country, as well as a large section of Knox-created zines, by individual students and clubs. While the zines cannot be checked out, they are available for reading in the library, and there are constantly new additions being made as the members of Zine Club! travel to zine conventions and pick up new zines, or add new zines of their own. Visit the Galesburg Illinois Zine Library to read more about the library.

If you have a zine you'd like to make or just want to learn more about zines, come to Zine Club! weekly meetings, open to everyone who would like to attend.
