The Green Bird

From the world of commedia dell'arte, Gozzi fashions his fiaba -- the fairy tale. A wicked queen, a foolish king, an imprisoned queen, twin babies spirited out of the castle and the clutches of the murderous queen, the kindly sausage seller and his wife, animals and statues come to life, singing fruit, and a musical fountain turn philosophy on its head and take an amused, and sometimes scathing, look at humanity. Despite creating a world of improvised zaniness, magical transformation, and delightful illusion, there lies beneath the mockery and ribaldry a dizzying tension between order and disorder, where the rules of the game may just be utterly unreliable.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle

Written in 1944 while German playwright Bertolt Brecht was living in America, The Caucasian Chalk Circle examines what occurs when law conflicts with justice. Brecht, while clearly influenced by his own perceptions of the world at the hands of war, specifically draws upon two distinct sources of literature to form his play: the biblical tale of King Solomon and the ancient Chinese play The Chalk Circle. Brecht adapted these stories into parable form and changed the setting to Soviet Georgia near the end of World War II. The theme of the play - resources should be given to those who will take care of them - is explored through the presentation of two further stories: one involves a kitchen maid named Grusha who saves the life of an abandoned child, and the second follows the arbitrary rulings of an unconventional judge named Azdak.

About Rep Term Knox College's Rep Term, the only one of its kind in the country, is undertaken every three years, ever since its inception in 1970 by Professor Emeritus Ivan Davidson and Robert M. & Katherine Arnold Seeley Distinguished Professor Emeritus Robert Whitlatch, along with former professor Peter B. Young. The two most recent productions were Repertory Theatre Term 2010 and Repertory Theatre Term 2007.

The central component to this unique opportunity is the construction - both intellectually and physically - of two main stage shows. The students spend several hours a day working in the scene and costume shops, and contributing to various crews including props, publicity, and dramaturgy, to name only a few.
