What did you think of the study abroad program you completed in Barcelona, Spain?
Studying in Barcelona was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I have a whole different perspective in the way that I think. I was able to immerse myself in the Spanish culture by being surrounded by Spanish students and taking classes with actual professors from the University of Barcelona.

The exchange of ideas I had with my Spanish friends was eye-opening. I was particularly interested in the different type of government system and the democratic process.

During my time in Barcelona, I traveled to six different countries. I loved seeing the differences in cultures and the rich history each country had. (Photo at bottom of page: Michael Gasparro in Marrakesh, Morocco.)

How would you describe academic life at Knox?
Academic life is a challenge. As an athlete, I always look to challenge myself, and this has translated into academics.

The thing is, you will find yourself loving that you are studying. At first, it was an odd thing when I was excited about writing a research paper. I found myself going that extra mile just out of curiosity. This has been spurred on by the support of my professors, who seem just as excited as I am.

Tell us about a memorable class, experience, professor, or assignment and what you learned.
My favorite class has been Comparative Democratization with Daniel Beers. I was nervous to take this class because it was one of the first upper-level classes I had taken. It ended up being a great class.

I learned a lot about other governments and the democratization process. For our final project, we had to choose a country and research the democratization process. I wanted to study the democratization process in Afghanistan. It was my first big research project. My curiosity never ended, and I knew after this class that I wanted to be an International Relations major.

What campus jobs have you had while at Knox?
I work in the Admission Office giving tours. I absolutely love it because I get to convey my experiences to prospective students. Their excitement makes me feel like I am helping them make one of the biggest decisions of their lives.

What would surprise your high school friends about you now?
I think my friends would be surprised by how many leadership positions I hold at Knox and how involved I have become. In high school, I was a little timid.

Ever since I came to Knox, I have found myself motivated to become more involved. Knox has allowed me to do so much: student government, varsity athletics, Greek life, and study abroad in Barcelona. I don’t have many other friends that can say they have done all that during their time at college.

Any advice for high school students on their college search?
When you are looking at schools, don’t be afraid to take chances. You never know what you will find and where you will feel comfortable. I took a chance in coming from San Diego to Knox. I couldn’t be happier with my decision.
