"In October 2006, 30 former Knox soccer players, primarily members of the
1973 Midwest Conference Championship team, gathered to honor Jorge
Prats at his induction into the Knox-Lombard Hall of Fame. Prats, professor
of modern languages at Knox from 1962 to 2002, was honored for his more
than three decades as the coach of Knox's men's and women's soccer teams. That 'soccer reunion' inspired us to spearhead a fundraising campaign to renovate the Knox soccer field and name it in honor of Jorge.
"The fundraising process was gratifying beyond our expectations. It reconnected us to friends and teammates from the '73 team we hadn't seen in years; it reconnected us to Knox; and it also reminded us that we can make a difference.
"The fundraising effort made a physical difference -- the soccer field is beautiful. But it also had an emotional impact -- we came to realize that we had all been touched deeply by our relationships with Jorge. The feelings of love and respect we have for him reflect the impact he, and Knox, had on each of us. Current students, both men and women, caught a glimpse of that at the Jorge Prats Soccer Field dedication at Homecoming 2007.
"The efforts on behalf of Prats Field also made us realize that there are many other alumni who share similar affinities -- sports teams, sororities and fraternities, students who lived together or who studied together with any number of professors. Our self-organized soccer reunion came about to honor a man who 'made a difference' in our lives and at Knox. We encourage other alumni to do the same. Change a few lives!"
