Family and Friends Weekend Schedule
Friday, October 12, 2012
8:00 am - 3:50 p.m. -- Attend Knox classes. Some classes may fill up quickly, so arrive early. We ask your cooperation in moving on to another class in the period if the class becomes full.
4:00-6:00 p.m. -- Welcome Center Check-in. Pick up your final schedule and packet and visit with other families and friends in Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union.
4:00 p.m. The Knox College Democrats and Knox Conservatives host a "Debate on the Steps of Old Main." Location: East side of Old Main (by Lincoln/ Douglas plaques.)
4:15 p.m. "The Mysteries of Ancient Egypt," Lecture by William Nethercut, professor of classics. Professor Nethercut will talk about Ancient Egypt from the Pre-Dynastic Period through the New Kingdom and Intermediate Periods, showing images of religious, literary and linguistic artifacts that contribute to the current state of knowledge in the field. Round Room, CFA.
7:00 p.m. -- Volleyball vs. Carroll University, Memorial Gym.
7:00 p.m. The Beeson Brothers, including Knox bands Moonshine Kids and A Few Good Men. Taylor Student Lounge, sponsored by the Songwriters Guild Club. (Family Friendly!)
7:00 p.m. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Meeting, Room E117, Science and Mathematics Center.
7:00 p.m. Gaming Information Network (GIN) Charity Game-A-Thon, Post Lobby. Super Smash Bros Tournament tonight. $5 entry, prizes to participants in the finals. 100% of proceeds from these tournaments and any other donations received will go directly to Child's Play following the event.
7:30 p.m. This is the Rill Speaking -Taking place on the newly refurbished outdoor pageant wagon, This is The Rill Speaking by Lanford Wilson is a "play of voices" as six actors take on the challenge of 17 different characters. This slice-of-life drama follows the members of a small town as they weave in and out of each others' daily routines, bringing to light the beautiful simplicity - and complexity - of a small community. Directed by Jordyn Stewart '14. Location: Gizmo Patio. (ok for all to attend, but some material may not be suitable for very young children.)

9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. -- Q and A about Life at Knox
Your questions answered by Knox administrators. Kresge Hall, CFA.
9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. HORIZONS Student Research Presentations
Coordinated by Sandra Shumaker, Director of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies. Come hear our Knox students present their research and ask questions about their projects. Each session will run in 15 minute segments; treats provided. Round Room, CFA.
10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. -- Tours of the Old Jail
Enjoy the exclusive "Family and Friends Weekend only" tour of the Old Jail, a piece of Knox County history here on campus! Old Jail.
10:30 - 11: 30 a.m. -- Internships - Explore the Possibilities
Terrie Saline, Center for Career and Pre-Professional Development. Find out about internship opportunities and hear from students who have completed recent internships. Kresge Hall, CFA.
11;30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. -- Knox's Study Abroad Programs
Robin Ragan, Associate Professor, Modern Language/Co Director, Global Studies Program. Ask questions about Knox's study abroad programs and talk with students about their experience. Kresge Hall, CFA.
11 a.m. - 4 p.m. -- Knox College Bookstore, Open in Basement, Seymour Hall
Lunch - Reasonably priced lunch options exist in the Gizmo and Hard Knox Café, Seymour Hall. Hard Knox Café is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gizmo is open all day.
1:00 p.m. -- Volleyball vs. Ripon College, Memorial Gym. Today's game is a "Purple-Out!" Wear your Knox purple and cheer on our team! There will be a "spirit corner" starting at 12:15 p.m. where friends and families can make signs to encourage their favorite players and the entire team.
Sunrise - Sunset -- Green Oaks Field Station. No formal tours will be given, but you are welcome to drive out and have a look on your own. Maps will be available at the Welcome Center.
2:00 - 4:00 p.m. -- Cherry Street Combo (Jazz) performs on the Gizmo Stage. Gizmo, Seymour Union.
2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. -- Kids' Carnival
Supervised fun for young children with the members of Women of Influence and Blessings in a Backpack! Arts and crafts, face-painting, bean bag toss and more. Kids must be accompanied by parent or guardian and not be left unattended at the carnival. Lobby, Post Hall.
3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Greek (Fraternities and Sororities) Organization Meet and Greet. Come enjoy cookies and drinks with students from the Greek Community on campus. Parents of Greeks and non-Greeks are all welcome to come and socialize and ask questions about Greek life at Knox. Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union.
7:00 p.m. -- Havdallah Celebration
A gathering for Jewish students and their family & friends for the closing of the Sabbath ritual. Sponsored by the Hillel Club. Alumni Room, Old Main.
7:00 p.m. -- Rock-tober Fest!
Hosted by Union Board; come join us on the Gizmo patio for music and treats. Rain location: Taylor Student Lounge.
7:00 - 9:00 p.m. -- Pi Beta Phi Philanthropy Project, Speed Read, Gizmo.
