Ed Helms to Speak at Commencement

Ed HelmsActor and comedian Ed Helms will be the speaker at this year’s Commencement. Helms is best known for scene-stealing roles on both the big and small screen, including his work as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, his character Andy Bernard in the U.S. version of the hit television sitcom The Office, and his role as Dr. Stu Price in The Hangover films.

Helms is the second veteran of Comedy Central's The Daily Show to deliver Knox's Commencement address. Stephen Colbert, who was also a regular on the Comedy Central hit show before starring in his own award-winning Comedy Central series, The Colbert Report, delivered the 2006 Commencement address.

"With his work on The Daily Show and his roles in two of the most popular sitcoms and films in recent memory, Ed Helms is an iconic figure for this generation of students," says Knox College President Teresa Amott. "I thank the senior class for choosing a speaker who has made such a distinctive contribution to our popular culture."

Students Create Public Mural with Professional Artist

Students Create Public Mural with Professional Artist

Knox College students collaborated with a professional artist to create a mural that bursts with bright colors and large geometric shapes -- providing a welcome relief from the often-gray days of winter. The 18-foot-tall mural is the work of four Knox students, all studio art majors, and professional artist Danielle Kimzey, Knox's artist-in-residence during fall 2012. Taking on such a large-scale project was unlike any previous artistic experience, the students said. To complete the mural, they often had to paint while standing on scaffolding, and the collaborative nature of the project required them to communicate with each other as clearly as they could. Senior Ties Social Media to Social Movements

Through her independent research project, Knox senior Eva Marley has discovered that Twitter is no longer merely a place to talk about the tasty sandwich you just ate. She is exploring the different roles social media sites like Twitter play in organizing young people into social movements. "My research examines youth participating in social movements and how young adults really get involved in the mobilization and the organizational elements of participating in social movements, political activism, and protests," explained Eva. Read more about what Eva is learning and how her trip to New Zealand kick started her interest.
