General Standards of Conduct
Academic Dishonesty. All students are required to adhere to the Honor Code. All violations of the Honor Code may be subject to disciplinary action. Allegations of academic dishonesty are heard by the Honor Board.
Arson. Any individual who knowingly and willfully sets fire to property with the intent to inflict permanent damage may be subject to disciplinary action.
Assault. All members of the community have the right to physical health and safety. Anyone who intentionally and directly endangers another person's physical health or physical safety may be subject to disciplinary action.
Bad Checks. Checking policy falls under the purview of the Business Office of Knox College.
Computer Policy. A violation of the Policy on Acceptable Use of Technology may be subject to disciplinary action. See Computer Services section of Handbook.
Disturbing the educational process. All members of the Knox Community have responsibilities based upon the nature of the educational process and the requirements of the search for truth and its free presentation. The following actions may be subject to disciplinary action:
- interfering with the freedom of the members of the campus to pursue normal academic and administrative activities, including freedom of movement;
- infringing upon the rights of all members of the campus to privacy in offices, laboratories, and residence hall rooms and in keeping of personal paper, confidential records and effects, subject only to general law and to conditions voluntarily accepted by the members of the campus community; records on its members should contain only information which is related to the educational purposes or safety of the campus;
- interfering with a member's freedom to hear, study, or express through writing, speech, or protest unpopular and controversial views on intellectual and public issues.
Drugs. Knox College prohibits the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees on College property or as any part of its activities. The College also prohibits the use of illegal drugs and the illegal use of legal drugs.
Failure to Appear. Failure to appear when called to a judicial hearing may result in disciplinary action. An accused party failing to appear may have his/her/their case tried in absentia.
Failure to Observe Sanctions. Failure to observe sanctions imposed by the Grievance Panel, Honor Board, Conduct Councils, and/or an administrator acting in his/her judicial capacity may result in additional disciplinary action.
Failure to Respond to Judicial Allegation. Parties accused of violating the Conduct Code will receive written notification of the need to meet with the Convener of the Conduct Council. A second notification by email and phone will be attempted. Failure to respond may result in additional disciplinary charges. An accused party failing to appear may have the case heard and decided on in absentia.
False Accusation. Due to the potential penalties involved, accusations that bring about judicial proceedings are very serious. Knowingly making a false accusation to the Grievance Panel, Conduct Councils, and/or Honor Board may be subject to disciplinary action.
Fighting. Fighting, physical attacks, or intimidation perpetrated against any member of the college community will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.
Forgery. As exemplified in the Honor Code, Knox College values the honesty of members of the community. Therefore, knowingly forging official documents may be subject to disciplinary action.
Hazing. All campus organization including Greek organizations are not permitted to haze. Campus organizations including Greek organizations may confer membership on new members in many different ways. All organizations including Greek organizations at Knox must not have any kind of informal initiation, of the type known as "Hell Week." All informal initiations must take place within the chapter houses or sorority bungalows, and must not cause any kind of public nuisance or disturbance. Nothing may be done that involves the possibility of physical injury. Students must not be asked to violate their personal or moral convictions as a condition of initiation. The initiation program must not in any way interfere with a student's academic work.
Identification. Students are expected to carry their student ID at all times and present the ID when asked for identification by college employees. The card is the property of the college and may not be altered in anyway. Improper use of the ID card is subject to disciplinary action.
Intentional obstruction. Intentional obstruction is defined as any activity that unreasonably interferes with freedom of movement, either pedestrian or vehicular, on campus. Intentional obstruction may result in disciplinary action.
Intimidating witnesses or participants in a conduct hearing. Any intimidation of students participating in a hearing shall be viewed as a serious offense and may be subject to disciplinary action.
Misuse of identification. The use of another student, faculty, or staff member's identification with or without his/her permission may be subject to disciplinary action.
Misuse of Student Activities funds. The Student Activities Fee is budgeted each year to approved organizations and programs which are meant to benefit the community. Students who knowingly use Student Activities funds for their own personal gain without the permission of their organization may be subject to disciplinary action.
Non-academic plagiarism. Students are expected to maintain the same degree of honesty in their non-academic work as is expected for their academic work. Individuals who plagiarize non-academic work may be subject to disciplinary action.
Parking. Abuse of parking regulations resulting in excessive and or unpaid tickets may result in disciplinary action. The business office will collect parking violation fines.
Personal abuse. Personal abuse whether oral, written, or physical, that exceeds the bounds of appropriate discourse and appropriate civil conduct may be subject to disciplinary action.
Providing false information. Individuals who knowingly and willfully provide false information to a college official during the exercise of said official's responsibilities may be subject to disciplinary action.
Purposeful disruption. Purposely disrupting an educational program, extracurricular activity, college meeting, student organizational meeting, or an employee's workplace shall not be tolerated and such behavior may result in disciplinary action.
Roofs. Students may not go onto the roofs of any College buildings except for those built for occupancy such as the observatory on the roof of the Umbeck Science and Math Center. Unauthorized access to roofs may result in disciplinary action.
Smoking. State law prohibits smoking in all College buildings. Violation of this policy will result in disciplinary action.
Soliciting. Unauthorized soliciting is prohibited on campus. Peddlers are never authorized to sell door to door in the residence halls. Individuals who wish to sell merchandise or services should contact the Office of Student Development for approval. People who do not obtain proper approval may be subject to disciplinary action.
Telecommunications. Willful violations of the telecommunications contract may result in disciplinary action.
Theft. Theft of college and/or another community member's private property, including personal effects, student identification, club credits, student activities funds, or electronic property, including personal files, email, copy codes, or voice mail may be subject to disciplinary action.
Threats of force and/or violence. Students have a right to be free from threats of force and violence. Such threats or intimidation are absolutely prohibited and students who engage in such behavior shall be subject to disciplinary action. The individual threatened must have grounds to believe that the threat to their safety is real.
Trespassing. Trespassing shall be defined as unauthorized use of College facilities. Individuals who trespass shall be subject to disciplinary action.
Vandalism. The destruction or damage of college property or the property of members of the community is absolutely forbidden. Chalking on horizontal surfaces shall not be considered vandalism. Students who knowingly destroy or damage others' property or the college's property shall be subject to disciplinary action and possible financial remuneration. Students who accidentally damage or destroy property may have to reimburse the college though they may not be subject to disciplinary action.
Weapons and Explosives. Knox College Community members may not possess on campus or on their person: firearms, BB guns, air rifles, swords, sling shots, or martial arts weapons. Firecrackers, ammunitions or other explosive or incendiary devices are also prohibited. Any of these items (all those listed above) which are found will be immediately confiscated. Violators may be subject to disciplinary action which may include immediate removal from the college.
