Coursework in Chinese emphasizes language study as a gateway to understanding another culture, the world, and our place in it. The Asian Studies Program offers elementary and intermediate language instruction in Chinese, as well as advanced language instruction in an independent study setting. For more intensive experiences, the College also cooperates with the Chinese Studies Program at Beijing University and takes part in the Associated Colleges of the Midwest's "Shanghai: Perspectives on Contemporary China" program at East China Normal University (ECNU). See the Special Programs and Opportunities section of this catalog for details.

For a full description of the programs in Asian Studies, see the listings for Asian Studies and Japanese.
