MacOS Users

On-Campus Access to Department Accounts
  1. From the Finder (top menu), select Go and then Connect to Server.
  2. For the Server Address:, enter smb://departments.knox.edu and click Connect.
  3. Certain departments have separate directories and should connect as follows:
    • Admission: smb://admission.knox.edu/admission
    • Advancement: smb://advancement.knox.edu/development
    • Art: smb://art.knox.edu/art
    • GIS: smb://gis.knox.edu/gis
    • Journalism: smb://journalism.knox.edu/journalism

 

On-Campus Access to Home Accounts

  1. From the Finder (top menu), select Go and then Connect to Server.
  2. For the Server Address: enter the connection string corresponding to where your home account is locted and click Connect.
    • Students: smb://student.knox.edu
    • Faculty: smb://faculty.knox.edu
    • Staff: smb://staff.knox.edu
  3. When prompted, enter your Knox username and e-mail password and click Connect.
  4. You will see a listing of all of the available folders. You need to open the one that contains your account. The home directories have been split up in faculty, staff and student folders. The student folders have been further divided into folders labeled with the year of enrollment.
  5. Once you have double clicked on the correct folder, all of the account folders will appear. Scroll through the list until you find the folder labeled with your username. Double click on the folder labeled with your username. You will now see all folders in your account. You can organize this space any way you like by adding new folders. Selecting New Folder from the File pull down menu does this.
  6. To back-up/store files from your local hard drive to your home account, open your hard drive and have it display its contents next to your open Home Account. Now just copy and paste (or drag-and-drop holding the option key down, click once on the selected file, hold the mouse button down while moving the mouse pointer to the desired destination folder and release the mouse button) the documents/files from your hard drive to the desired folder(s) in your Home Account.

You now have access to all of the files you have moved to your Home Account from any Macintosh that is connected to the network on campus as long as you log in as directed in steps above. The connection to your Home Account will remain active until you restart or shut down your computer.

Caution: Do not remove or change any folders in your Home Account that you did not create! Folders created for special purposes such as web accounts (e.g. public_html) could be disabled by any changes you make. You can add and modify your own folders without any adverse consequences. No programs/applications should be moved to your home account. There is not enough room for applications in your Home Account.

Off-Campus Access to Department or Home Accounts

You may access Departmental Accounts and/or your Home Account from any computer connected to the Internet through FTP. For further information regarding this, please see the FTP Access documentation.
