Anyone knowingly and willfully activating any alarm without appropriate reason may be subject to disciplinary action.
Student rooms are inspected for damage by the Campus Life staff prior to the beginning of the academic year, and may be inspected at the beginning/end of other terms or at any time. Within five days of arrival, each resident is responsible for reviewing and signing a Room Condition Report.
If damage beyond normal wear and tear occurs during the year, the person(s) responsible are charged for repairs. When damage cannot be traced to any one individual, repair costs are divided among the members of the room, suite, or adjoining suite, depending on the extent or location of damages. Repair costs for damages in common living areas (stairways, kitchens, etc.) are charged to residents of the entire building. Deliberate damage may also result in disciplinary action.
Throughout the year students responsible for creating unusual cleaning problems and for damage to College buildings, grounds, furniture, or equipment will be charged for the cost of bringing the facilities back up to standard.
The cost of repairing damages is assessed by Facilities Services on a time and materials basis. Damage charges appear on monthly billing statements from the Business Office. If a damage assessment remains unpaid at the end of the year, the balance remaining in the student's registration deposit account may be applied towards the remaining bill. As in the case of other unpaid College bills, degrees are not conferred until damage charges are paid in full.
Knowingly and willfully damaging housing facilities beyond that of normal wear and tear may result in fines and/or disciplinary action.
Your room will be your home away from home, so feel free to decorate your room as you choose. Decorations should not cause damage or create safety hazards. Listed below are some guidelines to follow to prevent damage or extra room charges.
All personal belongings, including furniture that you bring with you, must be removed from the premises when you check out of the residence hall room. Personal belongings and furniture cannot be left in student rooms or suite areas.
TVs, computers, stereos, and small refrigerators are permitted but the residence hall rooms are not wired to carry larger appliances such as air conditioners and space heaters. Only UL-approved electrical cords should be used. Power strips are highly encouraged. The use of extension cords in student rooms is highly discouraged.
Cooking is not allowed in student rooms or suites. Most residence halls provide cooking facilities, usually in the basement of the halls. Food may be kept in student rooms but it must be stored in sealed containers. Toasters, hot plates, electric skillets, and the like are not permitted.
Anyone knowingly and willfully activating a fire prevention device without appropriate reason may be subject to disciplinary action.
Removal of furniture from pre-designated areas without permission is forbidden. Violators of this policy may be subject to disciplinary action.
Students who withdraw during the academic year must vacate their rooms immediately. Only students registered for rooms may live in those rooms. Violations of this policy should be reported to the Residential Learning staff. Violations could result in eviction from the residence halls of all students involved and a fine of no less than two months' room fee and no more than one term's room fee. If a student is asked to leave the residence halls as a result of disciplinary action, his or her parents may be notified.
Insurance for Personal Property: Knox College is not responsible for personal belongings. Some homeowners' policies cover student belongings in the residence halls. Ask you insurance provider about policies and/or separate coverage.
Unauthorized duplication, possession, tampering, or transfer of keys and/or locks is forbidden. Violators of this policy may be subject to disciplinary action.
Coin-operated washers and dryers are located on the third floor of Seymour Hall and in the basement of all other College-owned housing with the exception of all Greek houses, Campbell-Elder, Furrow, Simonds, Drew, 530 S. West St., 675 S. West St., 697 S. West St., 260 W. Tompkins and 270 W. Tompkins. Students living in these locations can use the laundry facilities in adjacent halls.
The laundry rooms have tables, clotheslines and ironing boards with nearby electrical outlets. Students must provide their own irons and, for safety reasons, all ironing should be done in the laundry rooms.
To prevent loss or theft, clothes should not be left in the laundry rooms. Report machine malfunctions to JETZ Laundry Systems. The number is listed on each machine and/or in the laundry area.
Fish and small caged animals (guinea pigs, hamsters, etc.) are allowed in your personal living unit (but not in the suite areas). Your pet must be approved by your roommate, kept in a cage or terrarium, and be well cared for. Dogs, cats, and ferrets cannot be kept in College living units.
Due to local ordinances, wild animals are not allowed (i.e. monkey, raccoon, skunk, fox, poisonous snake, python snake, boa constrictor snake, piranha fish, leopard, panther, tiger, lion, lynx or any other animals that can normally be found in the wild). A Campus Safety Officer or a member of the Student Development staff may remove pet(s) that present health concerns to any resident. Students who are found to be in violation of this policy will be charged a fine of $25 per day until the animal is permanently removed from the College living unit.
Every effort is made to respect the privacy of students and their rooms, but the College reserves the right to enter residence hall rooms at any time. Generally, employees of the College enter rooms only to clean at the end of each term or for repair and general maintenance throughout the year. At the end of the fall term, College staff will enter student rooms to secure them for winter break. Emergencies involving the health or welfare of a student may necessitate entrance without the occupant having prior notification. In other cases, a staff member will enter a room only when the occupant, the resident advisor or another staff member is present. The College staff will attempt to contact occupants before entering a student's room without the student being present.
Each living unit creates and enforces its own policy regarding quiet hours, although the Office of Student Development has pre-designated some housing units as 24-hour quiet areas. Throughout final exam periods, quiet hours are in effect for all residential living areas 24 hours/day.
Quiet hours are a shared responsibility. Students should respect the rights of their suitemates to have an environment conducive to study. Music should be kept at a level that will not disturb roommates, suitemates, or neighbors. It is the responsibility of each student to let other students know when activities are causing an annoyance. If the problem cannot be resolved, resident advisors, Campus Life staff, or Campus Safety may be contacted for assistance.
Repairs and Maintenance
The College provides routine repair and maintenance services for College buildings, furniture, and equipment. Students should not attempt to repair any damage that they cause. Repairs must be completed by the Facilities staff using approved material. If repairs or maintenance are needed, place a service request by calling extension 7251. Emergency situations receive priority and all other jobs will be handled as quickly as possible.
Limited storage is available in most residence hall basements. Contact the Campus Life Office for your storage location. All items should be labeled clearly with the student's name and contact information. The Galesburg Fire Department prohibits the storage of furniture and carpet. This applies to self-made furniture and furniture which can be disassembled. If left, these items will be discarded. The College cannot assume responsibility for items stored on campus. Storing items in College facilities is discouraged. Personal property may not be stored or left in a student room over the summer or once a student has vacated the space for any reason.
When students have guests on campus, they are responsible for their guests' activities. Residents who abuse this privilege may be prohibited from having guests. Overnight guests are not permitted for extended periods of time. Roommates must agree to overnight guests and suitemates must be consulted.
