Community Engagement Kickoff: Day of Service

Students, faculty, staff, and local community members join together to engage in volunteer service with our community partners.


The Day of Service event begins at 12:00 p.m. Sunday, September 9, in the Center for Fine Arts (CFA) lobby. Following a welcome from President Amott, all volunteers will be arranged into groups with their chosen community partner. Some volunteer sites are within walking distance, and others will involve van and bus transportation. We will depart CFA at 12:30 p.m. and return to campus around 3:00 p.m. just in time for Pumphandle and an all campus picnic! Our Galesburg community partners include:

YMCA Kid Care Station (10 volunteers)

It's Spruce Up Day at the Kid Care Station! Help this daycare center clean and organize toys, move playground equipment, and spruce up the center for fall. 129 E. South Street

St. Mary's Square (6 volunteers at 12:30 p.m., 6 volunteers at 2:00 p.m.)

Want to use a power washer? Then sign up at St. Mary's Square Living Center. Volunteers are needed to help power wash residents' wheelchairs. Help polish and shine wheelchairs while you get to know some of the residents right next door to Knox.

Discovery Depot (30 volunteers)

Go to Discovery Depot to help give an indoor and outdoor spruce up. Projects include organizing materials, power washing, painting, playgroup maintenance, etc. Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you can get dirty.

Orpheum Theatre (25 volunteers)

Volunteers will assist Into the Woods production workers in preparing the theatre, working on set and design elements, as well as miscellaneous building work, arranging, and organizing. Gloves will be provided.

Cardboard Boat Regatta (11 volunteers)

Join the fun at Lake Storey by helping corral the cardboard boats competing in Galesburg's annual Regatta. Volunteers will leave from the Seymour Union loading dock at 11:30 a.m. and return at 3:00 p.m.

Knox Recycles

Meet outside the south entrance to Seymour Union (closest to the cafeteria entrance) after President Amott's kick-off at the Center for the Fine Arts (CFA). Help us as we attempt to recycle 100% of the cardboard used during move-in 2012! Volunteers will be provided t-shirts and gloves. Please wear clothing that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes. The tasks include:
  • helping place signs, recycling bins, or other items near residence hall check-in areas
  • communicating with residents and their families about the move-in recycling effort and sustainability initiatives at Knox
  • encouraging residents to recycle their cardboard and other recyclable materials by giving them to volunteers
  • collecting boxes and other items from people and trash areas, hallways, etc.
  • breaking down boxes and transporting them to the Seymour Union loading dock to be baled
  • placing other recyclable materials in bins in or near halls
  • other recycling and reuse tasks as needed

FISH Food Pantry (30+ volunteers)

Take a tour of FISH Food Pantry and work as a group to paint FISH on canvas bags to be used for a food drive!

Civic Art Center (15 volunteers)

Work with Art Center staff to paint and prepare a function ball for "a Wicked 80s" fundraising event.

Carl Sandburg Historic Home (8 volunteers)

Volunteers will assist with cleaning out the basement at the site. Wear clothes that you are not afraid to get dirty, hard-sole shoes (no sandals or flip-flops), and a baseball hat or scarf on your head to prevent dust in your hair.

Safe Harbor Purple Hanger Resale Shoppe (up to 50 volunteers)

The Purple Hanger Resale Shoppe assists Safe Harbor in raising money to continue to provide services to victims of domestic violence here in Knox County. Volunteers will sort donations, hang clothes, clean the store, organize shelves in the store, hang signs, etc.
