Housing Options

Knox College offers its students a multitude of residence hall options. Historic houses, apartments, suite-style residence halls and traditional residence halls make up one of the most diverse selections of any college. Listed below is each option, a description of the selection process that applies to it, and some information about what each residence offers.

Small House Lottery

Small Houses at Knox provide a very unique and "closer" atmosphere for students. Available options are:

• Peterson House: 10 people (4 singles, 3 doubles) (NOTE: Peterson is an all-senior residence hall)
• 697 S. West Street: 5 or 6 people (2 doubles & 1 single or 3 doubles)

Applications are available on April 20th in the Campus Life Office and must be turned in by Thursday, April 26. Your group must have the exact number for each house to which you apply (i.e. you must have 10 in your group (all Seniors) to apply for Peterson House). You may tender multiple applications for the house, but you must have the appropriate number of students applying for each house. Any student living in a single in a house WILL be charged the singles fee.

You will be contacted via e-mail on Friday, April 27, if your group receives Peterson House or 697 S. West Street.

The Houses

All houses feature full kitchens and living rooms. Individual room phone service is available in all houses, with campus computer connections in each room. Because these houses were all former private residences, the rooms may not be large enough to hold the standard residence hall desks and dressers, so alternate models may be used. Contact the Campus Life Office if you have any questions about a specific house before you apply.

Medical Singles

These rooms are for students with medical situations that require single room occupancy. Applications, which are available in the Office of Campus Life, are due Tuesday, April 24 by 4:00 p.m. and require the documentation of a doctor or other health care professional. Students continuing with Medical Singles must reapply each year.

Fraternity Houses

Students wishing to live in housing provided by their Greek organization will conduct their own housing lottery. Once you have committed to live in a fraternity house, you will be ineligible to participate in the remaining campus lottery process.

Singles

These rooms are available to the student body at large and are limited in quantity. They are located throughout campus. Singles are not available in the general lottery, so if you do not receive one, you should look for a roommate. If you would like to apply for a single, applications are due on Tuesday, April 24 at 4:00 p.m.

You will receive an e-mail on Wednesday, April 25, notifying you whether or not you have been granted a single room based on your lottery number. If you receive a single room, you will select its location on Wednesday, April 25 during the evening in the Campus Life Office.

An additional fee is applied to all single rooms.

Block Housing

Block Housing is an option available for a group of students who wish to live together in one residential area. Block Housing is available in the following residences:

Groups must submit their applications to the Campus Life Office by Wednesday, May 9 at 4:00 p.m. Recipients of block housing will be notified sometime between May 10 & May 23.

Priority will be determined by averaging each group's lottery numbers. The group with the lowest average will be offered block housing first, followed by the group with the second-lowest average and so on. Each group will be able to indicate residence hall preferences on their application.

Each student may appear on only one (1) application. If an application is received containing the name of a student already on an application, both groups will be notified. If a solution cannot be found to remedy the situation, both group's applications will be considered null and void.

NOTE: Drew Hall, Griffith Hall, and some of the houses have only one bathroom, so residents must make arrangements to share these facilities.

The remaining single rooms in these areas will be medical singles or granted through the singles lottery.

Apartments

For many students, the chance to live in one of Knox's three apartment buildings is a very important aspect of their junior or senior year. Students choosing to live in the apartments must remain on the board plan.

Apartment applications are available in the Campus Life Office. Knox College apartments are available at:

• 284 West Tompkins: three or five residents
• 240 West Tompkins: two or four residents
• Hamblin Hall: two, three, or four residents

Apartments Offered:

Apartments carry an additional fee. A complete schedule of all college costs will be posted for students later in Spring Term. Students may add an additional resident to their apartment to avoid the fee.

Applications for small apartments are due by Tuesday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. The lottery event for these 2 and 3-person apartments will be held on Wednesday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m.

Applications for large apartments are due by Friday, May 4 by 4:00 p.m. The lottery event for these 4- and 5-person apartments will be on Monday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m.

All members on an apartment application must be present or represented by a signed proxy form at the apartment lottery to receive their apartment. Late applications will not be accepted.

General Lottery

If you have not received a housing assignment through one of the special options, you must attend the General Lottery on Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m.

During general lottery, lottery numbers are called, with roommates using the lower (better) lottery number of the two. When students are called, they move to another room, where they choose a room for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Students are encouraged to come with choices in mind, and backup options should their first choice be taken. Residence Halls available in General Lottery are: Furrow Hall , Conger Hall, Neal Hall, Longden Hall, Simonds Hall, Post Hall, Williston Hall, and One Townhouse. Off-Campus Living

For the 2012-2013 academic year, a special lottery was conducted to grant a small number of juniors and seniors off-campus status. This was done to accommodate our increasing student enrollment at Knox College.

General policies about off-campus living
To qualify for off-campus residence, you must: be 23 years or older by the approximate time Fall Term begins, complete four years of residency at Knox, be married or in a documented domestic partnership. It is unlikely that requests for off-campus permission will be granted for other than the reasons above.

To inquire about off-campus permission, please visit the Campus Life Office. Students who go through Housing Lottery and then seek off campus permission may be denied.

If you currently do not live on campus, you will not be assigned a lottery number. If you wish to return to campus, please contact the Campus Life Office and you will be added at the bottom of your lottery category.
