Installing Anti-Virus Software

WindowsPC Users

  1. Go to Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Programs (Vista and Windows 7) and remove all anti-virus / anti-malware software. Windows Firewall must be turned OFF:
    • Click on Start.
    • Click on Control Panel.
    • Click on Windows Firewall.
    • Click on Off.
    • Click OK to save your changes.
  2. Vista/Windows 7 users must turn User Account Controls OFF:
    • Click Start.
    • Click on Control Panel.
    • Click on Users.
    • Click on "Turn User Account Control on or off".
    • Uncheck "Use User Account Controls" and click OK.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Go to https://sophosr2.knox.edu/knoxsophosinstaller
  5. Enter your Knox e-mail username and password when prompted.
  6. Single click on Win-Sophos9_Install.exe.
  7. Click Save to save the file on your machine.
  8. Close your browser.
  9. Find and double click the dowloaded file.
  10. Click Install.
  11. The installation program will now automatically run. A black window may open. The actions of the program will show and the installation process will move along.

    When the program initially starts running, there may appear to be a delay of a few minutes as the program scans the PC and removes other antivirus software.

    Once the program has completed the install, a shield icon should appear in the Taskbar. The icon may flash for a short time while updates are applied from the central servers. Once complete, the icon should be light blue in color.
  12. Restart your computer.
