Mac OS X Network Printing Instructions

Network printing allows you to print from your local/personal OS X based computer to a printer connected to the Knox network. Before you are able to print you will need to install the printer and authenticate with the College's print server, called Nas. Before starting, it is a good idea to make certain that you have closed out of any open applications.

Note: These directions were created with OS 10.7 Lion. Other versions of OS X will have slightly different menus, but the overall process is the same. User input is designated in bold below.

  1. Click the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of your screen and select System Preference... .
  2. Select Print & Scan.
  3. On the Print & Scan window, toggle the padlock to the unlock position.
  4. Click on the + sign to add a printer. If a drop down menu appears select Add Other Printer or Scanner... .
  5. Click the Advanced tab; if you do not see the Advanced tab you need to add it. While holding the Control key click on the toolbar near the search bar, select Customize Toolbar... . Drag the Advanced gear icon onto the toolbar and click Done.
  6. The Advanced tab may take a few seconds to appear. Searching for printers... will appear.
  7. When the search completes, click the Type: drop down menu and select Windows printer via spoolss. You do not have to change the Device: field.
  8. For URL: type in smb://nas.knox.edu/{name of network printer} or smb://printers.knox.edu/{name of network printer} for new printers installed Fall 2012. For example, for the printer in the E Wing basement of SMC, you would type: smb://nas.knox.edu/SMC_Labs or smb://printers.knox.edu/smclab-xc. You can find a listing of printer names in the printer directory.
  9. For Name: you can erase any text that is currently in the field and name the printer. You can leave the Location: field blank.
  10. For Print Using: click the drop down menu and click Select Printer Software... . Find the make and model for the printer you are installing and click OK. If you do not see the make and model you need please refer to the note below.
  11. Click Add to finish adding your printer.
  12. You may now print to the newly installed printer. When you try to print, you may be prompted to enter a username and password. Use your Knox username, in the format knox\username, and your password.

If you have any questions or need assistance please call the Help Desk at x7700 or send an e-mail to helpdesker@knox.edu.

Note: If you do not see the make and model listed you need to install the printer software first, you can find software on the manufacturer's website. Once you have the software installed return to step 10 and select your make and model. Alternatively, if you are unable to find software on the Web, you may be able to select Generic Postscript Printer from the Print Using: menu in Step 10. Using Generic Postscript Printer gives only basic printer functionality. Advanced features will not be available.
