Web Publishing On Campus

1. Click on the Go menu from the top of the screen and select Connect to Server ....
2. In the window that appears, locate the text box labeled Server Address. Depending on which server you are accessing, type in the address below and click Connect:
   
   smb://departments.knox.edu
   For departmental folders for campus departments, organizations and groups that actively share data through their accounts on campus and/or that have requested a Web account. Web content is housed in a public_html folder (or its equivalent) within each department, organization or group's individual folder. The contents of this public_html (or its equivalent) have the actual, live content and changes made within this directory are immediate to those viewing the directory from the Web.
   
   smb://staff.knox.edu
   For home accounts for all staff members at Knox. A public_html folder is placed in the home account by Information Technology Services that will be used for all Web content. The contents of this public_html have the actual, live content and changes made within this directory are immediate to those viewing the directory from the Web.
   
   smb://faculty.knox.edu
   For home accounts for all faculty members at Knox. A public_html folder is placed in the home account by Information Technology Services that will be used for all Web content. The contents of this public_html have the actual, live content and changes made within this directory are immediate to those viewing the directory from the Web.
   
   smb://student.knox.edu
   For home accounts for all students who entered Knox in the fall of each year indicated by the final two digits. A public_html folder is placed in the home account by Information Technology Services that will be used for all Web content. The contents of this public_html have the actual, live content and changes made within this directory are immediate to those viewing the directory from the Web.
   
   

3. An authentication window will appear. Enter your own e-mail user name (not your full name) and password in the corresponding text boxes. Click Connect.
4. On the Select the volumes to mount screen, select the appropriate volume. Click OK
   Depending on your Finder preferences, the volume will open in a new window or mount to your desktop.
5. Locate the appropriate account and open it. The web account will be titled public_html unless you have been told otherwise by Information Technology Services when the account was created.
6. You now are looking at your "live" Web content. Your initial page must be titled index.html. Directory browsing is not enabled so if there is no start page, browsers will need to know specific file names within your Web directory to view its content.You can place you Web content directly into this folder and have it viewable immediately on the Web. You are free to build the hierarachy any way that you wish. Remember, however, the more folders and subfolders you create, the more you will have to deal with elaborate paths for your links. One method to make linking pages a bit easier is to make sure to use relative links rather than full "http:" links. If you are unsure how to do this, please attend one of the Information Technology Services workshops on Web publishing or contact the Help Desk at extension 7700.

Follow the FTP Access directions to connect to your home account. Once connected, follow steps four through six outlined above.
