Prairie Players, a regional Theatre Company located in Galesburg, recently moved across town to a new home. These students helped with the move.

Community service is a long-standing tradition at Knox College, one that students, staff, and faculty engage in enthusiastically.

How do I find out about volunteer events?

All Knox students receive e-mail listings or mail postings throughout the year detailing volunteer opportunities which they can sign up for, either online or in person at the Center. Email volunteer@knox.edu for more information.

During First Year Orientation, the Center meets and greets all new students when they arrive on campus to promote volunteerism as a way to make new friends and get involved in the Galesburg community.

For all students, the annual Carnival of Clubs is the first place for students to sign up to volunteer for events that happen during the first two weeks of school.

How do I get there?

Many of our volunteer partners are located within easy walking distance from the College. In other cases the Center provides bus or cab transportation for volunteers who make long-term commitments to our annual volunteer programs. In addition, many clubs on campus receive money from Student Senate to defray transportations costs for their events, fundraisers and service projects. Rental vehicles are also available.

Are there special applications and orientations?

Some volunteer programs require students to attend an orientation and fill out an application. In a few cases, our partners perform background checks and/or conduct interviews. The Center will always include information about these requirements in their advertisements.

What long-term commitment volunteer programs are available?

The following programs require either a full term or a full year commitment:

• Best Buddies International. In partnership with St. Mary's Square, students form a year long friendship with an adult with disabilities. This includes both group and individual activities.
• Community Preschool Teacher's Aids - students volunteer to serve as teachers' aids in a preschool classroom
• Galesburg Enrichment Mentors (GEM): One-on-one tuturing for local students in grades 6-8
• Knox County Boys and Girls Club Students volunteer to serve as mentors to children ages 7-16 in an afterschool program
• Odyssey Mentoring Program Student-run organization which provides tutoring and mentoring for students in grades 6-8
• Reading Buddies Program with Neilson School - Students are matched with a second or third grade student for a term or a year long committment

How do I log my volunteer hours?

The Center for Community Service would like to record your volunteer hours. Send an e-mail to volunteer@knox.edu with the following information:

• Name
• E-mail address
• Campus Box Number
• Year of Graduation
• Organization or Community Partner
• Title of Event or Work Description (e.g. Physical outreach, Educational outreach, Social outreach)
• Was this service part of a course of study?
• If yes, what Course?
• Was this service part of your work with a club, organization or Greek affiliation?
• If yes, what organization?
• Date(s) and term (fall, winter, spring) of your service and total number of hours worked
