6 Reasons to Cheer for the Bronze Turkey

The Bronze Turkey Bowl, Knox's annual game against rival Monmouth College, is among the longest-running college football rivalries in the country.

Crowd of about 6,000 watches the 100th Bronze Turkey game hosted by Knox in 1989.

Here are six reasons why you shouldn't miss this year's Bronze Turkey Bowl, scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. in the Knosher Bowl at Knox on Saturday, November 12.

1. Perfect football weather. Forecasters predict temperatures near 50 degrees under cloudless skies at kickoff. Put on your purple and gold hats, scarves, and gloves, and sip some hot cocoa in the stands.

2. The Gabel brothers. Saturday isn't just the Bronze Turkey Bowl; it's the last time that Brock, Bryce, and Beau Gabel will suit up together for the Prairie Fire. Knox football has a long and proud tradition of multiple football players from the same family, but three brothers on the team simultaneously may be a new record.

3. Senior Day. Prairie Fire football will honor its six senior players this Saturday. In addition to linebacker Brock Gabel, defensive linemen Joe Chirbas and Jacob Paul, as well as offensive linemen Jack Donahue, Connor Niemiec, and Jordan Quertermous, will all play their final game for Knox College.

4. Come for the turkey, stay for the fox. This will be new mascot Blaze's first-ever Bronze Turkey. If you haven't had the chance to meet Blaze in person, this Knox fox will be in the stands and on the sidelines cheering on the Prairie Fire throughout the game.

5. It's nearer than St. Louis. Ardent Prairie Fire supporters who can't make it to Washington University to watch the Midwest Conference champion women's soccer team compete in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday can show their support for Knox College athletics a little closer to home.

6. If the Cubs can win the World Series... Monmouth is currently riding an 18-game winning streak in the Bronze Turkey Bowl. But, in a season of unexpected victories, could this be Knox's year, too?
