Moscow Ballet Summer Intensive at Knox College

Students, teachers inspired by ballet program

August 08, 2011

Students and teacher alike said they were inspired by their experiences at the Moscow Ballet Dance Intensive, a program that brought together grade school and high school dancers, local dance instructors and Knox College dance students and faculty with ballerina Nataliya Miroshnyk of the Moscow Ballet (below left). The week-long series of classes and workshops, held August 1-4 on the Knox campus, culminated in a Dancers' Showcase August 5 at the Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg.Moscow Ballet Dance Initiative at Knox College

The young students "came with a lot of energy, and it was exciting to be part of their day," said Angelina Rosa, a 2011 Knox graduate from Chicago with a major in education and a minor in dance. Rosa and Kyla Tully, a junior from Viroqua, Wisconsin, assisted with the workshops. At right, Rosa leads students onto the stage at Knox's Harbach Theatre.

Students at both pre-pointe and en-pointe levels worked  every day with Miroshnyk, who provided training throughout the U.S. in the Vaganova Method as part of Moscow Ballet's 2011 Summer Intensives. The sessions in Galesburg were provided to students at no cost through support from Knox College, the Orpheum Theatre the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, Arts Midwest and the Illinois Arts Council.
