Theatre Reenacts Cultural Collision at Maple and Vine
May 02, 2014
Above, Emily Passarelli, Tristan Yi, Paula Castanos, and Erik Dohner play a game of charades in a rehearsal of 'Maple and Vine.'
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and Knox College alumni, free to all students with school ID and free to Knox College students, faculty and staff. Tickets are available at the door one hour before each performance or by advanced reservation at 309-341-7472.
The comedy-drama is recommended for mature audiences. It depicts a young married couple who are unhappy with their lives in present-day New York City. They meet a group of "re-enactors," who live as if they were in mid-America in the 1950s, a time and place with supposedly different and simpler values. The title refers to an address in the re-enactors' town.
The play contrasts the present world of plastic surgery and smartphones, with that of a half-century ago, when only the husbands went to work and the wives sewed their own dresses.
"Jordan Harrison's clever play offers delightful entertainment but also compels us to reflect on the choices we make, about how to live and whom to love," Blackadder said.
