Know Before You Go
Make sure you're prepared. Get the information you need about meals, money, and more.
Meals are not provided on campus until orientation programs begin, so be prepared to enjoy many of the exciting restaurants within walking distance of campus.
The money that you bring with you should be in the form of traveler's check or a bank draft. It's not a good idea to carry large amounts of cash. You'll be able to open a U.S. bank account during International Student Orientation, and can receive money wired to that account.
To accommodate the range of financial situations for our families, Knox offers two options to pay tuition, room and board, and other fees. Your bill will be sent to you in July, and payment arrangements for the year must be made in advance of the August 11, 2014 due date.
Hospitalization costs in the United States are much more expensive than in most other countries. A person who is ill or injured may pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for medical care. Therefore, to avoid enormous expenses that would be beyond a student's financial resources, every international student is encouraged to purchase full insurance coverage. More information about health insurance will be available over the summer, and health insurance questions can be directed to Rebecca Eckart.
Clothing for All Seasons
Although the climate in Galesburg is generally considered mild, international students should be aware that there are four distinct seasons, and extreme variations in temperature do occur. In the winter, the area may have 3-6 inches of snow, and the temperature may vary from 20F (-6C) to 60F (16C). In the summer, the weather may be hot and sunny with temperatures between 65F (18C) and 100+F (38C). You may need to purchase clothing suitable for keeping warm if you're from a warm climate. A minimum of $200 would be needed for buying a warm coat and sweaters, and more could be spent depending on your resources. You'll have an opportunity to buy clothing for winter in Galesburg and surrounding areas, if you're not able to bring it with you.
Your residence hall room will be furnished with a bed, desk, chair, and a chest of drawers. Since space in your luggage will be limited, you likely won't have much room for things like bedding and other items to make your room comfortable. We will provide you with a set of bed sheets and a towel to get you started, and there will be plenty of opportunities for shopping during International Student Orientation. Traveling with Family
We welcome any family who plan to accompany you to Knox and look forward to meeting them! Please let OISS know if any of your family member plan to accompany you.
If you will arrive early to Galesburg, or have family accompanying you, you will need to make a reservation at a hotel in Galesburg. While Galesburg has a number of hotels, OISS suggests staying at the Country Inn & Suites or Best Western Praire Inn. There are several shopping centers and restaurants within walking distance of Country Inn & Suites. Best Western has an on-site restaurant, open for breakfast and dinner, and dinner room service. Other accomodations can be found here. A festival will be taking place in Galesburg September 1-6, so if you plan to stay at a hotel, we recommend that you make reservations as soon as possible.
OISS will prepare certain necessities, such as sheets, towels, snacks, and soap, for you to pick up when you arrive on campus. There will also be multiple opportunities to go shopping in Galesburg when you arrive for things you may not be able to pack.
