Modern Languages

Majors

Knox offers majors and minors in French, German, Greek, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish. To pursue a foreign language seriously is to come in touch with another culture, another mode of thought and expression, another way of viewing yourself and the world around you. It is to know another literature with its own great poets, its own peculiar rhythm and meter, its own attitudes and values. Such a pursuit leads to a more profound understanding and appreciation of your own culture, literature, attitudes and values.

The Program
To allow such a perspective-changing opportunity, Knox offers majors and minors in French, German, Greek, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish. Other options within the department include:

  • Major in Modern Languages, which combines intensive study in one language with complementary work in another language.
  • Major in Modern Languages and Classics, which includes a major in one language and at least two advanced courses in Greek or Latin.
  • Interdisciplinary major in Latin American Studies.
  • Coursework in elementary, intermediate, and advanced Japanese and Chinese.

The required courses for a major provide a solid literary, historical, and cultural grounding. You are encouraged to study other areas, especially history, political science, and economics. As a senior, you will round out your work with a Senior Project or Seminar.
