Emily Ioppolo '15

Stage Manager

Major in Theatre Major, Minor in Psychology

Emily is using the stage management skills she learned at Knox in the professional theatre world of Chicago.

Emily Ioppolo worked as a light technician in Chicago

What are your plans post-graduation?

Now that I've graduated from Knox, my plan is to start working in the Chicago theatre scene as much as possible, whether in stage management, production management, or electrics. I am currently working as assistant stage manager for Eclipse Theatre Company's production of A Perfect Ganesh by Terrence McNally. (I'm also working with two other Knox alums: Kathleen Dickinson '09 is our production manager, and Mike Smith '08 is our lighting designer).

How have your Knox experiences benefited you in the professional world?

My job would not have been possible without volunteering in the [Knox] scene shop. I also would not have known anything about programming lighting cues without my experience as a stage manager for the mainstage performances at Knox. Every skill that I needed to do my job I gained by working directly in the Theatre Department

The Knox experience was vital in every aspect of my journey to get me where I am now. From the classes and professors who inspired me to create art that challenges ideas, to the hands-on experience in the scene shop and stage-managing multiple productions, to the alumni contacts that have led to jobs in Chicago. Without Knox, there is no way I would be where I am now.

What are your long-term goals?

It is my dream and therefore long-term goal to eventually become an Equity Stage Manager working for a regional company like Steppenwolf or Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Because of the connections and skills I have gained at Knox, I am very confident that I can make my dreams into a reality.
