Taylors Receive Honorary Degrees at Homecoming

In recognition of their distinguished legal careers and unwavering service to Knox College, President Emeritus Roger Taylor '63 and retired pro bono counsel Anne Zweifel Taylor '63 were awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degrees during the 2013 Homecoming celebration. Sharing in the event were the Taylors' classmates -- the Class of 1963 -- who were on campus to celebrate their 50th Reunion. Watch the Taylors receive their honorary degrees.

Fans cheer on the Prairie Fire men's soccer team.In addition to the Class of 1963, more than 1,000 Knox College alumni and friends returned to Knox for Homecoming. They participated in dozens of Homecoming activities, attending classes,  enjoying a "Taste of Galesburg" All-Class Reception, touring Alumni Hall, and cheering the Prairie Fire men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the Midwest Conference leader Lake Forest -- the first victory against the Foresters since 1999.

Knox Choir Celebrates 75th Year, Hosts Reunion

Knox College Choir and choir alumni

Past and current members of the Knox College Choir celebrated the group's 75th anniversary during Knox's 2013 Homecoming festivities, coming together for a reunion concert and a reception afterward. Led by Professor of Music Laura Lane, who has directed the choir for 30 years, returning Choir alumni joined the 2013-14 Choir for three selections. Alumni Celebrate Reunions On and Off Campus

John Sauter '63 presents Knox College President Teresa Amott with a check from the Class of '63.In 2013, classes ending in "3" and "8" celebrated Reunions both on and off campus. From gatherings at local restaurants and bars on Friday night to tailgates at the Knosher Bowl on Saturday and brunches on Sunday, hundreds of Knox alumni were able to reconnect over old and new memories.

The 50th Reunion Class of 1963 presented the College with a check for $1,852,495. To honor their donation, the Office of Financial Aid in the newly renovated Alumni Hall will be renamed the Class of 1963 Office of Financial Aid. The Class of 1963 also received The Ralph Walter Prize for the class with the greatest percent giving participation and the Homecoming Attendance Award for having 78 classmates register for Homecoming.

Three Receive Knox Service Awards

Richard Kowalski P'14, Tony Liberta '55, and Steve Walton '74Knox Service Awards were presented to three individuals during Homecoming Convocation -- Richard Kowalski P'14, Tony Liberta '55, and Steve Walton '74. The Knox Service Award is given to any member of the Knox community to recognize outstanding volunteer service benefiting the College. Read more about the Knox Service Award recipients.

Two Teams, Three Individuals Inducted into Knox-Lombard Athletic Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame inductees

Two teams and three individuals were inducted into the Knox-Lombard Athletic Hall of Fame, which recognizes Knox's greatest athletes and teams. The inductees were

  • The 1956 football team that finished the season as co-champion of the Midwest Conference
  • 1957-58 men's basketball team that represented the conference in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history
  • Victor Garcia '03, one of the most prolific scorers to ever play basketball at Knox
  • Al Reilly, one of the most successful head football coaches (1968-76) in Knox College history
  • Jim Smith '78, a standout performer on the football field as a running back and on the track as a sprinter and hurdler

Scroll of Honor Recipients Recognized for Lifetime Achievements

During Saturday's FYC luncheon, three alumni were awarded Scrolls of Honor in recognition of their lifetime achievements in the service of their community, society, or humanity. The 2013 recipients were Will Burrow '63, Jane Ehrenberg Rosen '61, and Cliff Van Dyke '51. Read more about the Scroll of Honor winners.
