Former U.S.
Attorney General John Ashcroft discussed the U.S. response
to terrorism after 9/11 in his April 22 lecture,
sponsored by the Knox College
Republicans, with support from individual alumni donors and the Young
America's Foundation through its Harold Simmons Lecture Series. His lecture, titled "Leadership during Challenging Times," generated lots of reaction from the capacity audience, resulting in extensive media coverage. Ashcroft's speech and the audience's reaction is still generating discussion among Knox students and faculty more than a week after his appearance on campus.

Reporter Barry Bearak '71 Recalls Time in Zimbabwe Jail
New York Times
reporter and Knox College graduate Barry Bearak, who will receive an
honorary degree from the College in June, was jailed April 3 after the
government of Zimbabwe banned most foreign journalists from
covering the elections and barred Western election observers. After
four days in jail, he was released on bail and taken to a clinic for
treatment of injuries sustained while in custody.
Bearak is a 1971 Knox graduate and Pulitzer Prize winner. He recounts his experience in the article "In Zimbabwe Jail: A Reporter’s Ordeal," which was published in the April 28 edition of the New York Times. Read more.
In addition to Bearak, Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and CEO of American Association for the Advancement of Science Alan Leshner will also receive honorary degrees on June 7. Read more.

Memorial Gym Floor Unveiled as Tim Heimann Court
It came as a
surprise to even the guest of honor, who admitted, "It's hard to keep
secrets from me." But former Knox head men's basketball coach Tim
Heimann '70 was indeed surprised at the dedication of
the freshly-painted Memorial Gymnasium floor, as it was
unveiled as "Tim Heimann Court" during a ceremony on Saturday, April
26.
Heimann coached the men's basketball team for 24 years, retiring at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season. Duke Petrovich's lead gift of $250,000 started the ball rolling on the Memorial Gymnasium renovation. With his gift, Petrovich had the naming rights to the floor, and chose to name it after Heimann.
Renovations on Memorial Gymnasium continue, with the facility to be completed by the fall. Read more.

Flunk
Day 2008Overcast skies didn't put a damper on Flunk Day 2008. Students road mechanical bulls; tested their agility playing gladiator; jumped, ran, and climbed their way through an inflatable obstacle course; played human foosball; and enjoyed concerts on the lawn. See photos from Flunk Day 2008.

Thanks to everyone who sent in their special Flunk Day memories. Below is a small sampling of the notes we received from alumni:
- “I remember being home due to illness -- an 8 hour drive away -- one year. All of my friends called to wake me up as soon as they heard. Naturally, I quickly packed and hit the road back to campus (even though I probably should have stayed to rest) to hopefully enjoy some of the festivities. It's amazing how it can re-energize you, even when ill!” -- Laura Pilcher '03
- “One of my Flunk Day memories is of watching a movie in the gym, I think Blazing Saddles or something. In the middle of the movie, a guy streaked across the floor behind the screen, accompanied by lots of cheering from us! (In case you young ones don't know, streaking means running naked.)” -- Laurisa "Laurie" Horton O'Dear '79
- “My freshman year I remember very well because I still had to go to track practice that morning, while all of my friends and girlfriend, my wife now, got to start partying and having fun with everyone else. By the time I got out of practice, they had already been in the mud pit for hours...” -- Joseph "Joey" Finke '96
Prairie
Burn 2008 Snapshots More than 75 students worked at the burn on April 5, clearing tree limbs from the prairie and from trails through the extensive forest at Green Oaks, Knox's 700-acre biological field station. See pictures.

The Knox
College Choir's 10-day excursion to Barcelona,
March 16-26, included four scheduled concerts, and two
first-time opportunities that they didn't hear about until the day they
arrived — a concert in the Cathedral of Barcelona, and a live
spot on a program on TV3 — "the Catalan equivalent
of Good Morning
A

to choir director Laura
