Lo Nuestro was established in 1990 to provide a support group for Latinx students at Knox so that their experiences could be more meaningful and relevant. Lo Nuestro aims to increase and promote the awareness of the Latino community at Knox and within society at large. Members work to accomplish this through:

  • Defining the characteristics that make Latinx a multiracial and heterogeneous group;
  • Discussing the Latinx collective identity and reinforcing the links of language, tradition, and origin that unite the community;
  • Providing Latinx the means to preserve and develop their identity while receiving an education;
  • Being the catalyst for positive change by serving as a community outreach organization;
  • Seeking out non-Latinx and providing a safe environment in which they can gather to learn about and participate in the celebration of the Latinx culture and social significance.

Lo Nuestro is involved with people of all cultures. The group promotes cultural, social and political awareness through activities such as

  • Latino Pride Week,
  • Day of the Dead celebrations,
  • International Fair,
  • a symposium of in-depth student research on Latino issues,
  • assisting the Knox College Office of Admission with hosting and recruiting Latino students,
  • and the presenting of speakers, such as journalist and writer Beatriz Rivera, who gave a workshop on writing for and about communities of color.

Casa Latina Cultural Center, one of four cultural centers on campus, is Lo Nuestro’s largest resource. Casa Latina serves as the regular meeting and event space for Lo Nuestro and contains a collection of cultural artifacts as well as a library of books and videos.

Lo Nuestro welcomes anyone to take part in the activities organized by, and utilize the resources provided in, the Center.
