Mission Statement

Mortar Board, Inc. is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for their achievements in scholarship, leadership and service. Mortar Board creates opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities, and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.

History

Mortar Board's national organization was founded in 1918 by Ohio State University, Swarthmore College, University of Michigan, and Cornell University. Knox College's Mortar Board chapter—the Adelphi-Gnouthautii Chapter (named after two campus debate clubs) was founded in 1920, making it the 10th oldest chapter in the nation.

Membership

Membership is based on outstanding scholarship, leadership and service. Members must be at least in the final term of their junior year or have equivalent status. All members must meet predetermined local scholastic requirements (at least 35% of the class), in most cases a straight B average, and must have demonstrated leadership abilities and service to the the college and/or community.
