Knox College and the Sports Medicine/Athletic Training program provide many resources to handle injuries and/or illnesses suffered by varsity athletes. The Knox athletic training room is approximately 2,000 square feet and includes some of the latest modalities and equipment used to treat and rehabilitate most injuries that are common to athletics. The athletic training room is staffed throughout the academic day by certified athletic trainers for general treatments and rehabilitation, allowing athlete to receive care in a timely manner at no cost and without leaving campus and losing valuable academic time. During all practices and competitions, the facility is staffed with multiple certified athletic trainers and a staff of Knox students. Coverage is also provided to traveling teams by a combination of the certified and student staff. We have established a network of specialists for those injuries that require further attention. As part of this group, the Knox College Sports Medicine program has direct contact and immediate referral with an orthopedic group with specialties in knee and shoulder joint surgery, surgery of the spine, and general trauma. These physicians are on hand for coverage of some home contests and assist with the campus physical exam program. A working relationship has been formed with a large number of specialists in areas such as internal medicine, neurology, optometry, general surgery, oral surgery, podiatry, dermatology, and ear/nose/throat as well as rehabilitation services from Cottage Rehab and Sports Medicine. All these services are located here in Galesburg. Special insurance situations are accommodated with a fee for service arrangement with each of these specialists. As part of our prevention program, we require yearly athletic physicals. Three times a year we offer athletes reduced rate physicals on campus performed by the internal medicine specialists that are part of our referral network. As part of our emergency response plan, the vast majority of our athletic department staff is trained in American Red Cross CPR and the prevention of disease transmission. This is only a small number of the programs we have in place to reduce the incidence and severity of injuries. Our Mission Care, prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injury/illness, enabling the student athlete to participate at their most optimal level. Service Provided Evaluation of injury and illness, emergency response and care, referral to appropriate physician, and treatment/rehabilitation to return to full activity within the athlete's sport. Prevention Emphasized Through education, baseline testing, off-season conditioning, and pre-participation screenings. Certified Athletic Trainer The Certified Athletic Trainer is a specially trained para-medical professional to provide injury/illness care to the athlete both in an emergent and non-emergent situation. The certified athletic trainer is certified nationally and licensed by the State of Illinois and must perform yearly continuing education in order to maintain those credentials.
