Members of the Knox College Board of Trustees and those who have received the Knox College Alumni Achievement Award are not eligible for the award.

2023 Scroll of Honor recipients:

Michael Armstrong graduated in 1970 with a major in History. After Knox, Michael worked on the archaeological excavation of Fort Stanwix in New York state. He earned a Master of Management degree in marketing from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and worked for Time Inc. before joining U.S. News & World Report in 1980. He retired as the senior vice president of operations at U.S. News & World Report in 2009.  Michael was awarded two U.S. patents for magazine-binding technology and featured in industry publications for his work with consolidated magazine distribution systems, including advocacy with the U.S. Postal Service. After retirement, Armstrong was appointed by the trustees of the Village of Cold Spring, New York, to chair the committee developing a comprehensive plan, which was adopted in 2012.  He served as president of the board of the Chapel Restoration, a non-denominational historic church now used for concerts, weddings, and other events.  Armstrong co-edited The Majestic Nature of the North: Thomas Kelah Wharton’s Journeys in Antebellum America through the Hudson River Valley and New England, with Professor Steven A. Walton of Michigan Tech University.  Wharton, an English immigrant, had designed the historic Cold Spring chapel at age 18, in 1832.

Jeanne Franks graduated in 1971 with a major in Political Science. She is a self-employed marketing consultant and designer in the architecture and engineering industry. During her career, she has played a principal role in the success of two firms founded by African American women. She earned an MBA from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Her freshman year she hosted a jazz show on WVKC, from the station’s studio in the basement of Whiting Hall. She has been an on-air host of a jazz show for the College of DuPage 90.9 FM, WDCB, and WDCB.org in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, for almost two decades. Jeanne was one of the founders of A.B.L.E. (Allied Blacks for Liberty & Equality) at Knox, which raised cultural awareness in the Knox and Galesburg communities by bringing to the forefront issues that impact people of African descent. A.B.L.E. addresses issues unique to African Americans and the interaction between races. The group also serves as an added support service for the diverse student body at Knox College. As one of the founders, she advocated for the A.B.L.E. House, Black faculty, and Black studies.

Nancy Schmid Stanley graduated in 1964 with a major in English Literature. After Knox, Nancy moved to Washington DC and attended law school at George Washington University National Law Center. She subsequently became Congresswoman Bella Abzug's first legislative assistant for women's rights and her career thereafter included work as a lawyer for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Communications Commission, and as a member of a New York-based women's rights law firm that she helped establish. As a litigator during this period, she represented women in several early cases challenging the then almost-total absence of women in on-air and senior broadcasting positions at two of the major networks. For the last two decades of her career she was the Chief Mediator for the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, the first person to hold that position. During that time, she trained dozens of volunteer mediators, taught a mediation advocacy class at the George Washington University law school, trained Egyptian judges in mediation techniques immediately after the events of 9/11, and mediated or co-mediated many cases herself.
