2012  Scroll of Honor Recipients

John D. Cooke '52
John D. Cooke '52 John says Knox is very much a family affair. John's father, his uncle Paul, and his great   uncle George were all students at Knox.

After discharge from the Army in 1948, John worked a year and the started at Knox in   1949. He married Pauline Hansen in 1950 and his first son, John IV, was born at Galesburg   Cottage Hospital. He has two other sons, Paul and James.

John worked in labor relations for Union Carbide in Paducah, Kentucky, for 10 years. He left   Carbide to work as a management consultant for A.T. Kearney in Chicago. In 1967, he   joined  McDonald's Corporation where he served as senior vice president and as part of the company's top management team.

In the beginning, John worked directly for Ray Kroc, founder and visionary for McDonald's Corporation. He established the labor relations effort for the company, which for 10 years dealt with union organizing efforts. In 1976, John became the ombudsman for the McDonald's System, a position he held until his retirement in 1991.

In 1970, he was the officer responsible for building McDonald's first corporate office in Oak Brook, Illinois. Beginning in 1978 and continuing until 1989, he was responsible for building the Company's current office campus.

After retirement, John and his wife, Marge, moved to Galena, Illinois, where they live today. John is active in the community-he is a member of the Galena Rotary Club, and served on the Boards of Midwest Medical Center and the National Rivers Hall of Fame in Dubuque, Iowa. He is still a member of the Galena Territory Association, a former board member of the Galena Foundation, and a member of the 24th Infantry Division Association.

He and Marge support Riverview Center for sexually abused girls and women and the Galena Historical Society. Currently, he is involved in a new venture to build and operate a local retirement community in Galena.

Sue Brown Cowing '60
Sue Brown Cowing '60 Sue was born in Galesburg and has lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, since 1961. She earned an M.A. in European History from Emory University and did two years of post-graduate study in Asian history at the University of Hawaii, later serving as chair of the history department at La Pietra School in Honolulu. During the Vietnam War, she translated a major text on Southeast Asian history from French to English so that it could be used in the new courses on that subject springing up around the country.

Though Howard Wilson's Modern Fiction was her favorite course at Knox, she didn't imagine then that she would be writing seriously one day. After a near-brush with paralysis, she changed direction and focused on writing poetry and fiction. In 1989, she earned an M.F.A. in writing from Vermont College. She directed a monthly reading series featuring Hawaii writers and served as president of the Hawaii Literary Arts Council. In addition to poems and stories in journals and magazines, she published two award-winning poetry books: Fire in the Sea, an anthology of poetry and art that includes Hawaii and the Pacific, and a collection of original poems, My Dog Has Flies: Poetry for Hawaii's Kids. These two quite different books had a similar purpose-to overcome the perception of many mainlanders and Hawaii islanders that poetry is about somewhere else by people from somewhere else.

In 2011, she published her debut novel, You Will Call Me Drog, set in a town much like Galesburg. The book is included in the 2012 edition of Best Books to Read Aloud to Children and has been nominated for the 2013 Nene Children's Choice Award. Sue served for 10 years as regional advisor for The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and for 20 years on the steering committee of the Biennial Conference on Literature and Hawaii's Children. She is a recipient of the Cades Award for Literature. After reading and writing, Sue loves to do school visits, especially to public schools, and to lead occasional writing workshops for both adults and children, encouraging them to use their imaginations and explore language.

She agrees with Nebraska poet Ted Kooser's contention that there can't be too many poets: "After all, there's a significant service to humanity in spending time doing no harm. While you're writing your poem, there's one less scoundrel in the world. And I'd like a world, wouldn't you, in which people actually took time to think about what they were saying?"

K. Lane Miller '50
K. Lane Miller '50Lane currently resides in Swansea, Illinois. Following his time at Knox, he attended Western Illinois University and the University of Illinois.

Lane specialized in educational administration. He began his career teaching in Quincy,  Illinois. He then moved on to Belleville West High School where he served as principal for 15  years. Lane says that one of his favorite memories was preparing teachers for the new school  year. He later became superintendent of Belleville Township High School.

In addition to serving in these positions, he also evaluated Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Germany, in the Azores, and the State of Bahrain.

Lane has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and most of Europe and still remains active in his own community. He has been involved with the Belleville Area College Foundation Board and has served as president of the Belleville YMCA, Belleville Optimist Club, Abraham Lincoln Neighborhood Association, president of the St. Claire County Administrators, president of the Illinois Retired Teachers, vice president of the Belleville Chamber of Commerce, and treasurer of the Kinder Cottage Mission.
